Introduction:
1. Recently I received a note in the suggestion box that reads: “A sermon on Are We Doing God’s Will? Or Are We Lukewarm or Have We Left Our First Love? We should find a work no matter how small or great and do it with all our might. Yes we hear this over and over and over but do we think the Lord is not talking to each and every one of us? It seems that we think and act as if we think someone else will do that task hence it usually doesn’t get done.”
2. My apologies to the author if you didn’t want the note read. However:
1) It reveals this concern in a way that I cannot.
2) It is a powerful call to Christian service.
PROPOSITION: To teach the things God is trying to tell us in tragedy.
OBJECTIVE:To inform the hearer of God’s message to be found in tragedy.
INTRODUCTION:
1. Many things about this world make it a place in which tragedy can happen.
1) Human selfishness. Freedom of choice.
INTRODUCTION: Read Genesis 4:9
1. This question was raised in response to God’s earlier question.
2. The right kind of questions may cause us to think soberly.
DISCUSSION: (Discussion of this sermon on selfishness.)
THESIS: To teach the wonderful characteristics of the Messiah as described in Isaiah 9:6-7.
TEXT: Isa. 9:6-7
INTRODUCTION: Read Isa. 9:6-7
1. Queen Elizabeth II holds the following titles, “Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith”
2. In similar style Isaiah gives the wonder characteristics of a king to be born far in the future. He sees a king born.
1) He is a child born, an heir. “For unto us a child is born.”
2) He will be a male heir, a son. “Unto us a son is given.”
3) He is born heir apparent. “The government shall be upon his shoulder.”
3. Much as we have spoken of the current monarch of Great Britain His expanded name will include these attributes: Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
INTRODUCTION: 2 Cor. 7:9-10
1. Sometimes our translations are not helpful enough.
2. We read a word like “repentance” and wonder if we have a clear conception of the meaning.
1) We don’t use it much in conversation.
2) We are acutely aware that the modern meaning of a word may not convey the meaning of the original.
3. This is a word that is essential to understand. Paul associates it with salvation in our text.
INTRODUCTION: Read 1 Corinthians 4:6
1. In dealing with the Corinthian brethren’s tendency to render judgment upon one another based on the wisdom of men Paul gives a basic principle that needs to be heeded today as much as ever.
2. The need for this principle is seen in the great division in the religious world today.
3. The principle implies this:
1) God’s written word is FINAL on any matter it teaches. John 17:17
2) The wisdom of man is insufficient. Jeremiah 10:23
4. To understand why we must not go beyond what is written we must understand:
1) The nature of what is written.
2) The effects of going beyond what is written.
3) The rewards of not going beyond what is written.
Submissive Wife Bible INTRODUCTION: Read Eph. 5:22 1. Many in the world scorn the notion of a Patriarchal society, along with the idea of a wife submitting to her husband. 2. There is no doubt, though, that the Lord teaches that a Christian wife is to be in submission to her husband. 3. The Bible […]
Introduction: 1 Cor. 10:13
1. What do we say to those who cry, “I don’t know if I can live the Christian life.”
1) They’ve seen others fold under temptations.
2) They’ve not been able to conquer certain habits.
2. Here the apostle Paul gives a promise from a faithful God. You can trust Him.
1) No uncommon temptations.
2) No temptation beyond your ability.
3) No temptation without a way of escape.
Introduction: Read 1 Thess. 5:15
1. Paul gives instructive commands to the new Christians in Thessalonica.
2. What shall the Christian reaction to persecution be? (…)
This sermon is about the value of the old paths. These are the ways that have been laid down by God. Being old they are not obsolete. We should be seeking the old paths because they are timeless. PROPOSITION: To set forth the commandment of God to “seek the old paths.” INTRODUCTION: Read Jeremiah 6:16-21 […]
INTRODUCTION:
1. Sometimes it’s necessary to put things in a very basic, plain way.
2. Some won’t understand the importance of eternal matters without some plainness.
3. Once a famous football coach was upset with the performance of his team and decided to explain things from the very simplest matters. He began his speech, “This is a football.”
4. So, with this idea in mind let’s note some basic facts of life that we must know.
DISCUSSION:
Introduction: 1. Throughout Bible history God has chosen individuals to do His work. To perform His tasks. 2. When He does this He doesn’t ask for resumes. He doesn’t ask how prepared you think you are. He doesn’t care about perceived obstacles. 3. He just says to get it done. 4. If God has called […]

Introduction: Col. 3:23 1. Do you ever give up or lose heart on things because you see or hear of someone else doing “great” things? 2. We sometimes measure ourselves by the attainments or goals of others. 3. Just because we hear of something great does not mean God thinks it is great. 4. The […]
Sermon on Never Leave Nor Forsake You. Sermon outline by G. E. Watkins on God’s Providence.
INTRODUCTION
1. Those who are influenced and directed by the sword of the Spirit will produce “the fruit of the Spirit” in their lives … Galatians 5:22-23
1) We noted in our previous study that there is not a plurality of fruits, but one fruit
2) Yes, only one fruit that is made up of several interrelated graces or virtues, all of which will be manifested if one is truly walking in the Spirit
INTRODUCTION:
1. A mother comes to worship with deep concern for her baby. She can’t bear the thought of her child being lost. She wants him to be baptized.
2. This morning we are going to assure that mother and be instructed ourselves as to why we don’t practice infant baptism on those precious little ones.
1) It’s not because we don’t value them.
2) It’s not because of lack of concern for their souls.
INTRODUCTION: Read Mark 1:1-8
1. Concerning the text.
1) When we think of John we think of preparation. His duty was to prepare the nation of Israel to receive the Christ.
2) This he did by preaching, by conversion, and by example of a godly life.
3) It will be much to our advantage to study what this text says about his job of preparation. We have a preparatory work of our own to do.
4) Jesus is coming again!
INTRODUCTION: Read 2 Thessalonians 3:6
1. This passage deals with a specific problem in the Thessalonian church.
2. There were brethren who refused to work for their own living, 2 Thessalonians 3:11
3. These were called “disorderly.” They were without discipline.
4. These did not walk after the tradition received from the apostles. Therefore, they were in sin.
5. We have, in this apostolic injunction, a principle that must be learned by the people of God in every generation. If it is not learned the church withers.
6. WE MUST WITHDRAW OURSELVES FROM THE DISORDERLY.
7. Withdraw means to keep away, stand aloof (Gingrich, Shorter Lexicon).
8. This is not something to be taken lightly but with fear and trembling.
