Withdrawing from the Disorderly

SERMON ON DISCIPLINE

INTRODUCTION: Read 2 Thessalonians 3:6

1. This passage deals with a specific problem in the Thessalonian church.

2. There were brethren who refused to work for their own living, 2 Thessalonians 3:11

3. These were called “disorderly.” They were without discipline.

4. These did not walk after the tradition received from the apostles. Therefore, they were in sin.

5. We have, in this apostolic injunction, a principle that must be learned by the people of God in every generation. If it is not learned the church withers.

6. WE MUST WITHDRAW OURSELVES FROM THE DISORDERLY.

7. Withdraw means to keep away, stand aloof (Gingrich, Shorter Lexicon).

8. This is not something to be taken lightly but with fear and trembling.

DISCUSSION:

I.   WE MUST WITHDRAW FROM THE DISORDERLY

1. From those causing divisions, Romans 16:17.

2. From the factious or heretical, Tit. 3:10

1) hAIRETIKOS, factious, causing divisions (Gingrich, Shorter Lexicon).

3. Those who have thrust the faith from them, 1 Tim. 1:19-20

4. From the fornicator, the covetous, 1 Corinthians 5:1-13

II.  WE SHALL NOT WITHDRAW WITHOUT ATTEMPTING TO RESTORE

1. We must attempt to restore the erring, Gal. 6:1.

2. James 5:19.

3. We must attempt to restore the one who sins against us personally, Matthew 18:15-17

4. Jesus’ basic reason for coming to earth was to seek and save the lost, Luke 19:10.

5. We are to give a first and second admonition (to instruct, warn). Tit. 3:10; Matthew 18:15-17.

III. WE SHALL NOT WITHDRAW WITHOUT CONSIDERING OURSELVES

1. Gal. 6:1

2. Considering ourselves means:

1) to learn from the mistakes of others. Let it be a warning to us. Luke 17:32

2) to realize that it could have been us. 1 Corinthians 10:12

a. We are not to think that we are so spiritual that we are immune. Gal. 2:11; 2 Samuel 12

b. We are not to have a haughty attitude. Luke 15:11-32

3) to examine ourselves to make sure we are not in sin. Matthew 7:3-5.

IV.  WE SHALL REALIZE WHAT OUR FAILURE TO TAKE ACTION MEANS

1. No love for the sinner.

1) We have it within our power to save a soul from death. James 5:19-20; 2 Kings 7:3-9.

2) The love of Christ constrains us. 2 Corinthians 5:10-14; Acts 18:5.

2. No love for the church.

1) 1 Corinthians 5:6

2) Ephesians 5:25-27

3. No love for Christ.

1) If ye love me keep my commandments. John 14:15.

2) John 15:14

3) We sin when we do not discipline. We must repent and confess it to God.

4. No love for God. 1 John 5:3.

CONCLUSION:

1. We see a brother in sin.

2. Out of love for the brother, the church, and the Lord we go to him to warn and instruct him.

3. We do this in an attitude of humility, considering ourselves.

4. If the brother repents and confesses to God and the church a soul is saved and we have gained our brother.

5. If he does not repent after the first and second admonition we must withdraw ourselves.

6. We do this out of love for the brother, that he might repent.

7. We do it out of love for the church, that it might be kept pure.

8. We do it out of love for the Lord, for to love Him is to keep His commandments.
