“Hold Fast the Form of Sound Words”

Paul writes to Timothy to keep preaching the same doctrine he had received from Paul and other apostles. Paul writes, “hold fast the form of sound words.

Introduction: Read 2 Timothy 1:13

Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. (2Ti 1:13 KJV)

1. Paul gives a command…

1) Hold fast the form, follow the pattern, retain the standard, But what do we keep, retain or hold?

2) Sound words or teaching. But how do I know the “sound?”

3) Answer: “Which thou hast heard of me.”

2. What do we have to do to obey the command, “Hold fast the form of sound words.”

Discussion:

I.   To “Hold Fast the Form of Sound Words” Requires a Certain Attitude

1. Micaiah, 1 Kings 22:14, “And Micaiah said, As the LORD liveth, what the LORD saith unto me, that will I speak.”

2. Joshua, Jos 24:15, “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

3. Job, Job 13:15, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.

4. Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, Dan. 3:18, “But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.”

5. Ezra, Ezra 7:10, “For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments.”

II.  Hold Fast the Form of Sound Words – What are the Sound Words?

1. Not the words of man, Prov. 14:12, “ways of death”

1) Leaves out the idea, “The Bible doesn’t say we can’t do it, so we can.”

2) Hab. 2:20, “Let all the earth keep silence.”

3) Matt. 4:4, “Every word that proceedeth…”

4) Heb. 1:1-2, God has spoken through His Son.

2. And so sound words are the words of God.

III. What of the Words Spoken by Paul?

1. Given to the apostles, Mark 13:11.

2. Apostles given the word, John 17:8.

3. “Through the revelation of Jesus Christ,” Gal. 1:11-12.

1. What is your attitude toward God’s Word?

2. Do you only obey sound words?
