THESIS: To teach the wonderful characteristics of the Messiah as described in Isaiah 9:6-7.

TEXT: Isa. 9:6-7

INTRODUCTION: Read Isa. 9:6-7

1. Queen Elizabeth II holds the following titles, “Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith”

2. In similar style Isaiah gives the wonder characteristics of a king to be born far in the future. He sees a king born.

1) He is a child born, an heir. “For unto us a child is born.”

2) He will be a male heir, a son. “Unto us a son is given.”

3) He is born heir apparent. “The government shall be upon his shoulder.”

3. Much as we have spoken of the current monarch of Great Britain His expanded name will include these attributes: Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

DISCUSSION:

I.   HE IS WONDERFUL

A. In the song of Moses, Exo. 15:11.

B. His wonders to be remembered, Psa. 77:11.

C. Thou art the God that doest wonders, Psa. 77:14.

D. He did marvelous things in field of Zoan, Psa. 78:12.

E. He has done wonderful things, Isa. 25:1.

F. The effect on Nicodemus, John 3:2.

G. The men marveled, Matt. 8:27.

H. John’s conclusion, John 20:30-31

II.  HE IS COUNSELLOR

A. As I have purposed (counseled) so shall it stand, Isa. 14:24.

B. His purpose (counsel) is accomplished, Isa. 14:27.

C. His purpose (counsel) not to be rejected, Luke 7:30.

D. If the counsel be of God it cannot be overthrown, Acts 5:38-39.

E. The immutability of His counsel, Heb. 6:17-18.

F. The King’s purposes will not be thwarted.

III. HE IS MIGHTY GOD

A. He is a great God, a mighty and a terrible, Deut. 10:17.

B. Many times this particular Heb. word for mighty is used with regard to prowess, Gen. 6:4

C. So the “Son” has great prowess,

D. Potentate, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, 1 Tim. 6:15.

E. He has all authority, Matt. 28:18.

F. Who is subject to Him? 1 Pet. 3:22.

IV.  HE IS EVERLASTING FATHER

A. Carries the idea of “for ever,” Exodus 15:18.

B. Jesus existed in the beginning, John 1:1.

C. Glory before the world was, John 17:5.

D. He shall reign for ever and ever, Rev. 11:15.

V.   HE IS PRINCE OF PEACE

A. In the Bible there is example after example of kings whose purpose was to rule with a rod of iron, to subjugate and to exalt themselves.

B. The kings of the Assyrians are an example, Isa. 10:7.

C. It may very well be type of the Messiah to come when God makes Solomon king upon David’s death.

1. Solomon was young and not experienced in war.

2. His very name means peace.

3. He was the builder of God’s holy place.

4. It seemed to be God’s design for Solomon to have a long peaceful reign.

5. Sin entered the picture and Solomon accepted sin and his reign ended too early and in conflict.

D. The Messiah is the Prince of Peace

1. He is King of kings and Lord of lords, Rev. 19:16.

2. He has all authority, Matt. 28:18.

3. He is not a king of war, John 18:36.

4. He is the bringer of peace, John 14:27.

5. We are kept by His peace, Phil. 4:7.

6. We have peace with God through Him, Rom. 5:1.

VI.  HIS GOVERNMENT AND PEACE SHALL NEVER END

A. That it is the throne of David is a matter of prophecy, 2 Sam. 7:16.

B. The prophecy of Daniel tells of a kingdom being established that would stand forever, Dan. 2:44

C. It would be a kingdom that would never be destroyed, Dan. 7:14.

D. The angel told Mary that He would inherit David’s throne, Luke 1:32.

E. With the same angelic message we are assured that this kingdom would never end, Luke 1:33

F. The beginning of Matthew assures us that Jesus is qualified to be the Messiah because He is the son of David, Matt. 1:1.

CONCLUSION:

1. Seven hundred years before Christ Isaiah received a vision of the coming King of the line of David.

2. He will rule and you must accept His authority.

3. You must be in awe of Him because He is wonderful.

4. You can count on Him because His counsel is unchangeable. Many religious groups have changed their counsel over the centuries but the Messiah doesn’t change.

5. You must also be careful of Him because He is mighty God. Electricity warms and lights our homes but if you forget to respect it death may be the result. So it is with our Lord. He is a gentle king but He will return “in flaming fire, taking vengeance” (2 Thess. 1:7-9).

6. He cares for you and that care is forever. He is everlasting Father.

7. His kingdom is a peaceful kingdom. It is not a kingdom of warfare on this earth, but one of spiritual and eternal peace.
