Why Shouldn’t We Believe Modern-day “Revelation?”

Categories: Sermon Outlines, Topical Sermon Outlines

INTRODUCTION:

1. Modern-day revelations are rampant in the religious world. Angels, Holy Spirit, nudgings, still small voice.

2. These “revelations” are trusted by those who “received” them but rejected by most others. Divisive, contradicting, often confusing or vague.

3. Shall we believe modern-day revelations? Can we remove the division, contradictions, and know precisely what the Lord’s will is?

DISCUSSION: We must reject modern-day revelations because:

I.   They Come From The Wrong Source.

1. The true revelation of God comes by a specific route.

1) From the Father to the Son. John 12:48-50

2) From the Son to the Apostles. John 17:8, 14, 18

3) By the Holy Spirit. John 14:25-26; 16:12-13; Mark 13:11.

2. Modern-day revelation seeks to bypass this route.

1) Angels. 1 Kings 13:18; Gal. 1:8-9

2) The Holy Spirit. John 14:26; 16:13

a. He will say what Jesus has said.

b. Promise was given to the apostles.

3) Nudgings. When I was a kid I felt “nudgings.” It happened when contemplating doing that which I knew was wrong, remembering the consequences.

II.  They Are Not Confirmed.

1. When God gave men the responsibility of preaching His word, He gave them the means of confirming that word.

2. Old Testament

1) Moses. Exodus 4:1-9

2) Elijah. 1 Kings 18:20-24, 36-39

3. New Testament

1) Nicodemus. John 3:1-2; cf. John 20:30-31

2) Apostles. Mark 16:20; Acts 9:42

3) The word of God confirmed. Hebrews 2:3-4

4. What confirmation has modern day “revelations?” Where are the dead raised, the deaf hearing, the blind seeing, the lame walking? Where is the confirmation for the so-called revelations of our age?

III. Everything Needed was Given in the Day of the Apostles.

1. Modern-day revelation will not make the man of God more than perfect. 2 Timothy 3:16-17.

2. Is there MORE than ALL? 2 Peter 1:3

3. Once for all delivered is quite sufficient. Jude 3

CONCLUSION: Can we safely ignore modern day prophecies? Most certainly.

1. They come from the wrong source.

2. They are not confirmed.

3. Everything needed was given in the day of the apostles.

4. Our challenge is, Back to the Bible. Right source, confirmed, all that pertains unto life and godliness.
