In this lesson we will study what it means to be born again. To be born again means 1) To be born of water, 2) To be born of Spirit, and 3) To enter the kingdom of God. Each hearer should be able to understand and tell others what it means to be born again. To refute the denominational doctrine that the new birth does not include baptism and to teach the truth regarding what it meant to Jesus, John, and Nicodemus.

SUBJECT: Attitudes

TITLE: Beatitudes – The Meek

PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will look at Matthew 5:5, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” We will answer the questions, 1) Who are the meek? 2) How shall they inherit the earth? And 3) What are some practical applications for this verse?

Objectives: Each should be able to answer these questions in their own study.

Aim: That each would understand more about meekness and the blessedness inherent in being meek.

INTRODUCTION:

Sermon on The Ten Commandments Introduction: Read Exodus 20:3-17 1. To many, all that God desires is, “Keep the 10 Commandments.” 2. These have no concept of God’s differing dispensations, laws. 3. It is shocking to them to be told, “We’re not under that law.”

INTRODUCTION:

1. Men may have trouble finding the truth as Pilate did. John 18:38

2. Everything God says is truth.

1) “Thy word is truth.” John 17:17

2) It is impossible for God to lie. Hebrews 6:18

3. Knowing this, not surprising to find that God hates a lying tongue. Proverbs 12:22. A lying tongue is opposed to truth.

4. We should shun lying, no matter its apparent advantage.

5. NOTE: What lying is not. 1 Samuel 16:2.

1) Concealment is not lying.

2) Some would have us believe that their every question must be answered fully or we must be liars.

3) Withholding information is not lying.

4) Having two purposes and only revealing one is not lying.

6. QUESTION: Why shouldn’t we lie if it’s to our advantage?

INTRODUCTION:

A. Sin, is a word we are all familiar with, or, are we?

1. Sin comes from hamartia and literally means “to miss the mark” – it is the idea of an archer missing the target

2. Sin, though it is a small word, is a very terrible word

3. Sin is terrible because it separates man from God

a. Isaiah 59:1-2

b. Consider also – 1 John 1:6

B. Many in the religious world today try to talk as little about sin as they think they can get away with.

1. A few weeks ago I preached a sermon to Those Who Would Be Preachers. I encouraged them to:

1) Count the Cost of taking on the challenge of Gospel preaching.

a. 2 Timothy 4:5

b. 2 Corinthians 11:23-26. see also: Rev. 1:9; Hebrews 11:32-40.

c. You will pay for the privilege of being a preacher. The currency will be:

a) Sleep, wages, family.

b) Friends, wives, persecution.

c) Labor, watching family pay, pride.

d) Illusions of ‘saintly’ brethren.

2) Consider Your Qualifications for Gospel preaching (other than character, aptitude, voice.)

SUBJECT: Freedom in Christ

TITLE: Freedom

PROPOSITION: What is freedom in Christ? 1) The Christian is free from sin. 2) The Christian is free from the Old Law. 3) The Christian is not free from Christ.

Objectives: Each hearer should understand what it means to be free in Christ. To understand from what the Christian is free and from what the Christian is not free in order to be able to exercise freedom in Christ.

Aim: To instruct regarding the subject of freedom and warn regarding some erroneous conclusions that some have drawn regarding Christian freedom.

Introduction: Hebrews 10:23-27

1. Hebrews 10:23-27 relates to Christian living, faithfulness.

2. In contrast we have holding fast, provoking to love and good works with wavering, forsaking, and sinning willfully.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Open your bible please to Colossians 1:9&10.

2. In Colossians 1:9-11 Paul prays for those of the church at Colossae. In this lesson we are going to limit our study to just verses 9&10. We will study verse eleven in another study.

3. We will study this prayer for at least two reasons.

1) One reason will be to apply it to our own lives. If those of the church at Colossae needed these things then each and every Christian would need these things. Do you agree?

2) Another reason for studying these things is so that we will better understand what we should pray for when we pray. Again, do you agree?

4. Let’s begin to discuss the things that Paul prayed for.

A. If your friend were to ask you why you are a member of the church of Christ, would you:

1. Know how to answer them? … Paul said:

a. Be “prepared for every good work” (2 Tim 2:21)
