Subject: Necrology

Title: Questions Concerning Death–1

Proposition: In this lesson we will answer four questions concerning death: 1) What is death? 2) Why do we have death? 3) Who is going to die? 4) When can we expect death?

Objective: To biblically answer these four questions concerning death and comfort those who know death is near to them or to their relatives.

Introduction:

1. Read: Genesis 23:1-4, 19

2. About the Text:

1) In this chapter we read concerning the death of Sarah.

2) She was 127 years old when she died.

3) She left behind her an example of a faithful wife and mother.

4) She was mourned by her husband and her family.

3. Ref. to S, T, P, O.

Discussion: Some questions we can answer concerning death are:

I.   What is death? Death is the separation of the body and spirit.

1. Physical–James 2:26 “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”

2. Spiritual–Genesis 2:17 “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

3. Beneficial–Romans 6:1-10

4. Eternal–Revelation 20:14 “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.”

II.  Why do we have death?–Because we have sinned.

1. Genesis 2:17 “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

2. Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”

3. 1 Corinthians 15:56 “The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.”

III. Who is going to die?

1. Hebrews 9:27 “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”

2. Ecclesiastes 3:2 “A time to be born; a time to die.”

3. Psalm 89:48 “What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave?”

4. Ecclesiastes 12:7 “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”

IV.  When can we expect death?–Anytime.

1. Psalm 90:9-12 “For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”

2. Luke 12:37-40 “Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.”

3. James 4:14-15 “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”

Conclusion:

1. Someone said there are only two things your assured of in life–taxes and death.

2. The Master and the Servant story-

3. May we thinks soberly, seriously, and scrutinizingly upon our day of death and be prepared for its coming.

4. Invitation
