TITLE: Things That Unite – One Baptism

PROPOSITION: Baptism unites because 1) It is that which Jesus commanded. 2) It is that which the apostles practiced. 3) It is the point where the new man is created and we are placed into Christ’s body.

Objectives: That each would be able to learn and teach others regarding this critical point of unity.

Aim: That each would understand the uniting factors of baptism.

INTRODUCTION:

SUBJECT: Jesus

TITLE: “Man of Sorrows”

PROPOSITION: Why was Jesus a man of sorrows? Jesus was a man of sorrows because 1) though He was the Son of God, yet He chose to live as a servant, 2) though He proved his message to be true, many rejected it, 3) though He was innocent, yet He bore the sins of many.

OBJECTIVES: Each listener should be able to state why the prophet described Jesus as a “man of sorrows.”

INTRODUCTION: 1 Corinthians 15:58

1. In light of the fact that we are to be motivated in the pursuit of pleasing God, we are provided with reasons to be motivated, both positive and negative.

2. One of the most effective things God has done for us is to provide examples of commitment in the Scriptures to motivate us.

INTRODUCTION:

A. Romans 2:11-16

B. Now and then we hear of someone falling heir to some priceless treasure without having any concept of the importance or value of what he has, and then proceeding to be irresponsible in his custodianship of the thing.

C. Or, we may be in someone’s home who beams with pride as he shows off his expensive library of books — all of which are evidently unused! Acts 19:35

D. The people of Ephesus apparently were proud of their custodianship of the temple and the image of Diana.

E. The Jews were proud of their “custodianship” of the oracles of God.

4. The Jews did not do with the word of God what they should have … Romans 2:17-24

F. Do we have this same problem of seeing ourselves as “the custodians of the truth” without acceptance of the attendant responsibilities?

Introduction:

1. The work of the church involves 3 things:

1) Evangelism. Matthew 28:18-20; 2 Timothy 2:2

2) Benevolence. Gal. 6:10; James 1:27

3) Edification. Hebrews 10:24.

2. Many have placed the importance of benevolence and edification higher than they ought.

1) The main goal of many churches is to battle poverty and disease. Laudable in its place but was never the main goal of our Lord.

TITLE: The Bible Doctrine of Inspiration

PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will look at the Bible doctrine of inspiration: the evidence for inspiration; the nature of inspiration; the function of inspiration; and the scope of inspiration; some misunderstandings of inspiration.

Objectives: The hearer should be able to: state some misunderstandings; state what inspiration is; understand the authority, function, and scope of inspiration.

Introduction:

1. In our series, we have noted Jesus’ church: The promise to build (Matt. 16:18), and its reality (Acts 2:47).

2. The church is the Lord’s body (Col. 1:18). He is its Head, and the Head regulates the body. We set forth the idea that the New Testament contains a church pattern.

I.   The Scriptures Themselves Set Forth The Idea Of A Pattern.

A. All we know, authoritatively, of the church is found therein.

B. And, the Scriptures are inspired of God, to furnish us completely unto every good work (2 Tim. 3:16-17).

1. Obeying the gospel is a good work — an essential one (2 Thess. 1:7-9).

2. In obeying, the Lord adds one to the church (Acts 2:47).

PROPOSITION: In the days of thy youth, 1) learn what it means to be principled, 2) listen to your parents, 3) treasure every moment you have.

Objectives: To teach and encourage our youth to live lives of wisdom.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Ecclesiastes 12:1

2. About the Text:

1) It is good to remember God in our youth.

2) This sets the whole “tone” for our entire life.

3) Psalm 71:17 states, “O God, thou hast taught me from my youth; And hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.”

PROPOSITION: Jesus is the loving Shepherd because 1) He supplies all of our needs (providence), 2) He defends us from harm (protection), 3) He lays down his life for us (preservation).

OBJECTIVES: Each hearer should be able to state why Jesus is the loving Shepherd and give one scripture that supports their answer.

AIM: To encourage each to understand Jesus as the loving Shepherd.
