INTRODUCTION:

A. A wonderful privilege enjoyed by the children of God is prayer…

1. Through prayer we can receive mercy and grace to help in time of need – Hebrews 4:14-16

2. Through prayer we can find peace that guards our hearts and mind – Philippians 4:6-7

B. But the privilege of prayer assumes God will heed our prayers…

God wants us to fulfill His purposes for us by living for Him every day. In this way, we can grow to be the kind of people that God wants us to be. Ultimately, God wants every single person to grow into the image of His Son, Jesus Christ. Romans 8:29 says, “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.”

INTRODUCTION:

A. If a visitor from Mars were to visit an average congregation of Christians, having read the Sermon on the Mount on the way, he would perhaps be shocked by the contrast!

1. Our Lord has just called His first disciples, first showing them the nature of true discipleship (Matt. 5:3-16)

2. Now in Matthew 5:17-48, Jesus is teaching His disciples what true discipleship means

Regardless of how many new technologies we obtain, the focus of the gospel is still the same: people. Jesus was about people; the church is about people; we need to be about people. What does that mean? It means continuing to worship and take care of the saints in the local body, reaching out to others in the community with the gospel and growing the body of Christ. Taking the message of the gospel to the rest of the world as we have opportunity (Matthew 28:18-20).

Introduction:

1. A few weeks ago I preached a sermon to Those Who Would Be Preachers. I encouraged them to:

1) Count the Cost of taking on the challenge of Gospel preaching.

a. 2 Timothy 4:5

b. 2 Corinthians 11:23-26. see also: Rev. 1:9; Hebrews 11:32-40.

c. You will pay for the privilege of being a preacher. The currency will be:

a) Sleep, wages, family.

b) Friends, wives, persecution.

c) Labor, watching family pay, pride.

d) Illusions of ‘saintly’ brethren.

2) Consider Your Qualifications for Gospel preaching (other than character, aptitude, voice.)

SUBJECT: Freedom in Christ

TITLE: Freedom

PROPOSITION: What is freedom in Christ? 1) The Christian is free from sin. 2) The Christian is free from the Old Law. 3) The Christian is not free from Christ.

Objectives: Each hearer should understand what it means to be free in Christ. To understand from what the Christian is free and from what the Christian is not free in order to be able to exercise freedom in Christ.

Aim: To instruct regarding the subject of freedom and warn regarding some erroneous conclusions that some have drawn regarding Christian freedom.

Introduction: Hebrews 10:23-27

1. Hebrews 10:23-27 relates to Christian living, faithfulness.

2. In contrast we have holding fast, provoking to love and good works with wavering, forsaking, and sinning willfully.

A. Purpose of Hebrews: To charge those tempted to return to the law of Moses that they have nowhere to go!

SUBJECT: Jesus, Salvation, Love

TITLE: Does Jesus Care?

PROPOSITION: Jesus cares about our necessities, our loved ones, but most importantly, about our personal salvation.

Objectives: Each should understand that Jesus cares about our life, but more about our soul.

Aim: To motivate all to think about their souls and salvation in relationship to the concern God has given for our physical lives.

PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will note a few things for which to be thankful.

Objectives: That each hearer would consider how they need to be thankful in their lives.

Aim: To reinforce the necessity of thankfulness.

THINGS CHRISTIANS SHOULD PRAY FOR!

INTRODUCTION:

1. Open your bible please to Colossians 1:9&10.

2. In Colossians 1:9-11 Paul prays for those of the church at Colossae. In this lesson we are going to limit our study to just verses 9&10. We will study verse eleven in another study.

3. We will study this prayer for at least two reasons.

1) One reason will be to apply it to our own lives. If those of the church at Colossae needed these things then each and every Christian would need these things. Do you agree?

2) Another reason for studying these things is so that we will better understand what we should pray for when we pray. Again, do you agree?

4. Let’s begin to discuss the things that Paul prayed for.

INTRODUCTION:

A. If your friend were to ask you why you are a member of the church of Christ, would you:

1. Know how to answer them? … Paul said:

a. Be “prepared for every good work” (2 Tim 2:21)

b. “Be ready to every good work” (Tit. 3:1)

c. And, Peter said … 1 Peter 3:15

2. Or, Would we be ashamed or afraid to answer them?

a. Romans 1:16

TITLE: Do Not Envy This!

PROPOSITION: The Bible teaches us some specific things NOT to envy. In this lesson we will note that we ought not to envy 1) the man of violence, 2) the arrogant, 3) the unrighteous and sinner.

OBJECTIVES: Be able to know that God has specifically forbidden envy of certain things and know what to search for in regard to these things.

AIM: That each would understand that we are to avoid envy and especially envy of these specific things.
