INTRODUCTION:

A. Illustration: WORKING TOGETHER

Two boys were riding a bicycle built for two and they came to a big steep hill. It took a great deal of struggle for the boys to complete what proved to be a very stiff climb. When they got to the top the boy in front turned to the other and said, “Man, that sure was a hard climb.” The boy in back replied, “Yes, and if I hadn’t kept the brakes on all the way we would certainly have rolled down backwards.”

1. I wonder how many of us have the brakes on with God?

2. I wonder how many of us are working against one another?

B. There are many things that keeps us from working together as we should, but what ever they are – they need to be resolved and/or worked through

INTRODUCTION:

A. A while back the news media focused our attention to the tragedy in Midland, where 18 month old Jessica McClure fell down an abandoned well in the backyard of their home. The whole community, the whole nation, and some from around the world showed their interest and concern for this little girl and her parents. On Friday evening, the news media began televising the entire rescue operation. After being in the well some 58 hours, young Jessica was brought out alive. It was a dramatic moment for those present, as they began to shout and clap. Emotion was high in homes that were watching the rescue, and I dare say there was not a dry eye anywhere among those that were watching. It was heart-breaking to think of such a small child in a dark well, but a joyous moment when she was rescued.

B. Now, if we can be that interested in the welfare of a little girl’s physical life, WHY can’t we be just half as concerned about the spiritual life of our friends and neighbors who are lost in the darkness of sin???

C. Let us take a look at the Christian’s concern for lost souls.

A. Have you ever made a promise?

1. One you didn’t keep?

2. Has anyone made a promise to you they didn’t keep?

B. A promise is a declaration that one will do or refrain from doing something specified – it is a declaration that gives the person to whom it is made a right to expect

C. The word “promise” appears 100 times in the Bible

1. But there are many, many more promises than these in the Bible

2. The Bible contains many different kind of promises:

a. Made to one’s self

b. Man to Man

c. Man to God

d. God to Man

D. The promises of God are certain

1. When we make promises we do not always keep them:

a. Un-purpose

b. Purposely

INTRODUCTION:

A. This morning I would like to give another reason why I am a member of the church of Christ – I am a member of the Church of Christ because it teaches the kingdom has now been established and Christ is now reigning.

B. The future kingdom theory together with the literal reign of Christ upon the earth for a literal 1,000 years has invaded the denominational world, it is publicly being advocated by their preachers, and it has even invaded the decision making of our government.

1. I could never cast my lot with a religious group which is lending its support to such a wild theory.

2. This wild theory is called “Premillennialism”

A. As has been pointed out in previous lessons, I am a member of the church of Christ because:

1. It was founded by the scriptural builder – Christ

2. It was founded on THE scriptural foundation

3. It was founded at the scriptural place – Jerusalem

4. Christ is the founder of only one church – His church

INTRODUCTION: John 18:1-11

A. Think how it would hurt to be betrayed by a friend and arrested on false charges.

1. I’ve never been arrested, but I’ve been betrayed by people I care about.

2. It is painful and discouraging.

3. It has been said that those who hurt us the most are those closest to us.

B. My experience doesn’t even compare, however, to the betrayal and arrest of Jesus.

1. We often concentrate on His death, burial, and resurrection – and rightly so

2. But from His betrayal and arrest there is a wealth of information about the knowledge and wisdom of God, the utter sinfulness of man, and the sacrificial love of Jesus.

A. We continue our study of the beatitudes which serve to introduce the Sermon on the Mount by Jesus

1. Together, the beatitudes teach us about faith – how to have faith and how to be a person of faith

a. The beginning of faith – poor in spirit / mourners / the meek

b. The growth of faith – hunger & thirst after righteousness

c. The maturing of faith begins with being merciful

1. We hear a lot about mean people these days, from serial killers to parents who actually kill their own children.

2. But what about in the Lord’s church? If you were asked to cast your vote for the meanest member in the church, for whom would you cast your vote? (ok. ok… besides the preacher)!

A. Why are you a member of the church of Christ?

1. If you are not a member of the church of Christ, why are you a member of the religious organization that you are?

2. Is it because that was the one your Dad and Mom were members of?

3. Is it because that is the one closest to your home, or has the nicest building in town?

4. Is it because it because you think that one church is as good as another?

A. Many businesses issue periodic profit-and-loss statements

1. Profit and losses are listed to show whether or not a company made money

2. Jewish rabbis used this kind of accountant terminology to compare what was important and what was not

3. Jesus used a similar approach, Matthew 16:26

B. In our text of study Paul included his own profit-and-loss statement, Philippians 3:7-8

C. As we investigate the text before us, we will see what mattered to Paul and what did not.

D. Each of need to ask, “What is truly important to me?”
