INTRODUCTION:
A. The crucifixion of our Lord took place at a location known as “The Place of the Skull”- Greek, Hebrew, Latin
B. Crucifixion was probably the most horrible form of capital punishment ever devised by man. It appears to have originated with the Persians (c. 522 B.C.).
1. Later, it was employed by the Greeks. Following the destruction of Tyre, Alexander the Great crucified 2,000 men of military age.
2. The Jews even used crucifixion on occasion. In the inter-biblical age, Alexander Jannaeus (103-76 B.C.) crucified 800 Pharisees who had been involved in a revolt.
3. But the Romans were most noted for the practice. In 71 B.C., following a slave revolt in Rome, 6,000 recaptured slaves were crucified on the Appian Way leading to the city

INTRODUCTION: A. In previous lessons we have that noticed that I am a member of the church of Christ because: 1. It was founded by the scriptural builder – Christ 2. It was founded on THE scriptural foundation 3. It was founded at the scriptural place – Jerusalem 4. Christ is the founder of only […]

INTRODUCTION: Read Gen. 3:1-24
A. Have you ever wondered how one could allow a moment of pleasure to destroy his/her reputation?
1. What causes one to mortgage his life to pay the high price of sin?
2. What causes one to turn his back on God, his family or his brethren?
3. Genesis 3 will give us some insight into these questions
B. The Bible is a book about sin.
1. Genesis 1 & 2 sets forth man in his innocence.
2. The remaining 1,187 chapters depict man as a sinner, and as one who is in need of grace – the salvation that can only be found in Christ.

DISCUSSION:
INTRODUCTION: John 18:1-11
A. Think how it would hurt to be betrayed by a friend and arrested on false charges.
1. I’ve never been arrested, but I’ve been betrayed by people I care about.
2. It is painful and discouraging.
3. It has been said that those who hurt us the most are those closest to us.
B. My experience doesn’t even compare, however, to the betrayal and arrest of Jesus.
1. We often concentrate on His death, burial, and resurrection – and rightly so
2. But from His betrayal and arrest there is a wealth of information about the knowledge and wisdom of God, the utter sinfulness of man, and the sacrificial love of Jesus.
INTRODUCTION:
A. There are many today in the church who believe that sermons ought to be characterized more by positive presentation than by negative correction.
1. But, Jesus’ own sermons demonstrate otherwise.
2. Beginning in Matthew 5:17, Jesus begins a lengthy discourse directed against those religious leaders who were guilty of perverting Old Testament teaching.
B. The scribes and Pharisees were accusing Jesus of speaking evil of the Law of Moses, and that He came to destroy the law.

INTRODUCTION:
A. In previous lessons we have noted:

2. He thus has a new relationship to God, a new status: he belongs to God
3. As a result, he has adopted a new mind, a new way of thinking: he thinks on the basis of faith
B. But in addition to these things, the Christian lives in “newness of life”
1. Romans 6:4
