We're Never Too Old

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

Just because we find ourselves in our 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, or 80’s, doesn’t mean we’re “over the hill.“ Do we remember Grandma Moses? She was 100 years old and still producing scenic paintings (see video).

George Bernard Shaw wrote his last play at almost 94 years of age. Pianist Arthur Rubinstein played at Carnegie Hall when he was 89 years old (see video). Winston Churchill wrote “A History of the English-Speaking Peoples“ (see Amazon.com) when he was 82 years of age.

The Bible tells of many godly people who didn’t let their advancing years slow them down. At 85 years of age, Caleb entered the promised land of Canaan, driving out the Anakims (Joshua 14:6-15). God’s great deliverer, Moses, continued to faithfully lead the people of Israel until he was 120 (Deuteronomy 34:5-7).

One of the components of their success was a steadfast faith in God (Hebrews 11:24-29; cf. 1 Corinthians 15:58).

There are many people in our world today who have lived far beyond the 70 years mentioned in Psalm 90:10 and they are still bearing “fruit in old age” (Psalm 92:12-14) by encouraging others and using their talents in service to God.

Unfortunately, many in the Lord’s kingdom who are far younger than the above mentioned folks, have decided to “coast” home, doing as little as possible regarding the work of the Lord (contrast with 1 Corinthians 15:58).

Brethren and friends, we’re never too old to work in service to the Lord.

No matter what our age, let us “rejoice and be glad” — the Lord being magnified (Psalm 40:16; Psalm 70:4).
