We Are “Fearfully And Wonderfully Made”
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles, uncategorizedWhile recently surfing the Internet, I read that hummingbirds can fly backwards, but I wanted to confirm that information. So one morning, I observed hummingbirds coming to a hummingbird feeder at my father’s house.
As the hummingbirds began to appear at the feeder, I soon gave up trying to watch their wings, because all I could see was a blur. But I was captivated by the feisty little creatures as they darted up and down, away and back, competing for an open spot at the feeder and chasing one another away.
After a while, only one bird was left — her long, thin beak sucking up the watery liquid. When she was finished drinking, I was amazed to see her flying straight backwards, then up, and finally darted out of sight among the trees.
How did she fly backwards? According to the website information, the hummingbird has the ability to rotate its wings in a circle, thus allowing them to fly — not only backward, but forward, up and down, and sideways. Sometime on the fifth day of creation, while He was forming sea creatures and birds, God created the hummingbird with its amazing ability to fly backwards (Genesis 1:20-23) — a true attestation of His creative power.
My confirmation of the hummingbird’s amazing ability to fly backward, caused me to think that as human beings, we too are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). This knowledge alone should cause us to praise and glorify our Creator (Psalm 100:3-4; Isaiah 43:7; cf. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 2 Corinthians 6:16; Revelation 5:8-13).
