“My Interpretation” Or “Your Interpretation?”
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles, uncategorizedFor every Bible teaching that has been passed down to man through the Holy Spirit and inspired prophets and apostles (2 Peter 1:19-21; John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 2; Gal. 1:6-12; Ephesians 3:1-6), there can be only one meaning — the meaning that God originally intended to convey.
We know that we can arrive at and understand God’s truth, because the Scriptures state that we can (John 8:32; cf. Acts 17:11; Ephesians 3:1-4; Ephesians 5:17; 2 Timothy 2:15 ASV).
As diligent students of God’s word, we must refrain from misinterpreting, distorting, and misusing Scripture (2 Corinthians 4:2; Gal. 1:7; 2 Peter 3:16).
We must carefully test all teaching we receive from the righteous standard of God’s word (Romans 1:16-17; Romans 10:1-3; 1 John 4:1; cf. Psalm 119:142,144,151,172 NKJV). We must “take heed how we hear” (Luke 8:18), making certain that we are receptive to God’s truth (Luke 8:15).
Brethren and friends, when it comes to properly understanding the Bible, there’s really no such thing as “my interpretation” and “your interpretation.” For there’s only one meaning — and that’s the meaning that God originally intended to convey. We must never allow folks who are “always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 3:7), to deter us from “coming to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3-4).
