SUBJECT: Fundamentals Bible Class

TITLE: Lesson 8 — What must I do to be saved?

PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will study what the Bible tells one to do to be saved.

OBJECTIVES: Everyone should be able to understand the plan of salvation and explain it to others.

AIM: To help everyone understand the reasons behind the five step plan of salvation.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Acts 16:30

2. About the Text:

1) Supposing that his prisoners had escaped, the jailer was about to kill himself.

2) Paul stops him.

3) Having had such a close brush with death, the jailer knew that he needed salvation.

4) So he asks this question.

3. Regarding our situation.

1) What about us?

2) Are we asking this question of ourselves?

3) Are we asking this question of others?

4) Do we KNOW how to answer this question today should someone put it to us?

5) Let’s study how to answer this question this morning.

DISCUSSION: What must I do to be saved?

I.   Hear

1. This is the starting point because one cannot believe without hearing. Romans 10:17

2. We must hear someone.

1) In contrast to Moses and the Prophets, we must hear Jesus.

2) Deut.18:18, 19

3) Acts 3:22, 23; Acts 7:37

4) Hebrews 1:1-3

5) Matthew 17:1-5

6) John 14:6

3. We must hear something.

1) Jesus said, “Take heed what ye hear.” Mark 4:24

2) The object of our hearing is not just any message, but the gospel message!

3) Mark 16:15, 16 — preach the gospel.

4) Hear the word of the gospel, Acts 15:7

5) Hear the word, Acts 4:4; 10:44; 13:7; 13:44.

6) Hear Christ preached, Acts 2:22; Acts 8:5, 6

7) Hear things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, Acts 8:12

8) Hear all things commanded of God; Acts 10:33

9) Hear the salvation of God; Acts 28:28

4. We must hear in a specific way–with a view toward obedience.

1) Jesus said, “Take heed therefore, how ye hear.” Luke 8:18

2) Matthew 7:24-27

3) Luke 8:21

4) Luke 11:28

5) James 1:22-25

II.  Believe

1. Comes after hearing because of Romans 10:17

2. New Testament faith involves knowledge.

1) Luke 1:1-4 — belief and certainty.

2) John 20:30, 31 — Evidence given so we can believe.

3) 2 Corinthians 4:6 — God gives knowledge to us.

4) Ephesians 3:4 — we can have the knowledge that Paul had when we read

5) Ephesians 4:13 — unity of the faith is based upon knowledge

6) Phil. 3:8 — sacrifice all to gain the knowledge of Jesus Christ

7) Col. 1:10 — increase in knowledge

8) 1 Timothy 2:4 to be saved we must come to a knowledge of the truth.

9) 2 Peter 1:5, 6 — we are to add knowledge to our faith and virtue

3. New Testament faith involves trust.

1) Romans 4:17-21 — Abraham’s faith involved a great amount of trust.

2) Acts 1:6-9

3) Acts 10 and Peter’s vision.

4) Acts 16:6-10 — Paul and company trusted in God and went where God told them to go.

5) Hebrews 11:7ff — these were all situations in which they put their trust in God.

4. New Testament faith involves action.

1) John 6:29 — God’s work is the work of faith.

2) Acts 2:41 — when they believed (received their word) they acted.

3) Acts 8:12 — when they believed, they acted.

4) Acts 8:39 — when he believed he acted.

5) Acts 16:14 — when she believed she acted.

6) Hebrews 4:1-6 — Disobedience is the same as not having faith.

7) Hebrews 11:7ff — Those who believed, acted upon that faith.

8) James 2 — Faith without works is dead.

III. Repent

1. Comes after faith because one cannot know of what to repent without believing one is in sin.

2. Not just being sorry.

1) 1 Corinthians 7:8-11

a. Not a sorrow of the world which works death.

b. But having a godly sorrow.

c. A sorrow that works righteousness and purity.

2) Notice the sorrow of Judas. Matthew 27:3-5

3) Contrast with the sorrow of Peter. Matthew 26:75

4) Look at the repentance of Paul. Acts 9:9

3. A change of mind that results in the reformation of life.

1) The word repentance literally means a change of mind.

2) Sinners are called to repentance–to change their minds and ways.

a. Matthew 2:17

b. Luke 5:32

c. Acts 2:38

d. Acts 3:19

3) Matthew 3:8 — repentance bears fruit.

4) Acts 26:20 — must do some things that suit repentance; that show repentance.

4. Repentance is action of faith.

1) Luke 7:36-50 — the woman with the ointment.

2) Luke 19:1-10 — Zacchaeus

3) Acts 8:9-12 — at one time they believed Simon, but now they believed Philip

4) Acts 9:

5) Acts 16:33 — washed their stripes.

5. Failure to repent results in condemnation.

1) Matthew 11:20 ff

2) Acts 17:30

3) 1 Peter 3:9

4) Luke 13:3, 5

IV.  Confess

1. Confession comes after repentance and belief, but before baptism.

1) Notice John 9:22 and John 12:42

2) Acts 8:37

2. Jesus made it plain that those who did not confess Him would not be confessed of the Father.

1) Matthew 10:32, 33;

2) Luke 12:8

3. Confession is UNTO salvation; Romans 10:9, 10.

4. 1 Timothy 6:12; To be in the sight of many witnesses.

V.   Be Baptized

1. Matthew 3:6-16 — in Jordan river, with much water, Jesus to fulfill all righteousness.

2. Matthew 28:19 — in order to make disciples.

3. Mark 1:4-9 — for the remission of sins

4. Mark 16:16 — shall be saved

5. Luke 3:7-21 — for the remission of sins

6. John 1:25-33 — with water

7. John 4:1, 2 — Jesus baptized in water as well.

8. Acts 1:5 — with water.

9. Acts 2:38 — in the name of Jesus; for the remission of sins.

10.Acts 2:41 — based upon gladly receiving God’s word.

11.Acts 8:12-16 — based upon the hearing of the kingdom of God.

12.Acts 8:36-38 — had to go down into the water to do it. Preceeded by confession of faith.

13.Acts 9:18 — followed repentance.

14.Acts 10:47, 48 — commanded by God.

15.Acts 16:15 — based upon faith.

16.Acts 16:33 — followed repentance–whole house did it.

17.Acts 18:8 — preceeded by hearing and faith.

18.Acts 19:3-5 — different from John’s baptism.

19.Acts 22:16 — for washing away sins, equal to calling upon the name of the Lord.

20.Romans 6:3, 4 — the likeness of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ.

21.1 Corinthians 1:13-17 — does not matter WHO does the baptizing as long as it is INTO Christ.

22.1 Corinthians 12:13 — into the Body by the Spirit

23.Galatians 3:27 — into Christ; put on Christ

24.Ephesians 4:5 — only ONE baptism.

25.Colossians 2:12 — burial, faith in the operation of God.

26.1 Peter 3:21 — does now save us!

CONCLUSION:

1. God’s plan for man’s salvation involves all of these things.

2. Let’s learn it, live it, obey it, and teach it to others!
