Ignorance

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

The outstanding characteristic of our time is ignorance. Oh, we have definitely gathered more information and learned how to do far more than any people who have ever lived. But we are still in error and ignorance because we have not bothered to learn God’s word.

Jesus said to the Sadducees,

You are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures, nor the power of God” (Matthew 22:29 NASB).

The world could very well understand its own impending peril, but it does not do so. The word of God is ignored, and like those of Noah’s time, we speed to destruction with no awareness of the danger.

Jesus told the Pharisees,

For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. For as in those days which were before the flood, they were eating and drinking, they were marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so shall the coming of the Son of Man be” (Matthew 24:37-39 NASB).

The church plods along, fully convinced that all is well when attendance and contributions are high. They had a similar situation in Laodicea. We would do well to read the Lord’s letter to them carefully (Revelation 3:14-22).

The answer to our ills is God’s word. It is the light we weary travelers need (Psalm 119:105). It is the sword of the Spirit which can discern the thoughts and the intents of one’s heart (Ephesians 6:17; Hebrews 4:12). The word of God is the heavenly seed which can feed a starving world (Luke 8:11).

May God open our eyes to our own needs so that we might all partake freely of His Word (Revelation 21:6; Revelation 22:17).
