A. Genesis 1:1
1. Today the Bible’s account of the origin of all things is being called into question.
2. Many are saying that the first eleven chapters of Genesis are merely a myth.
3. Many are excepting the evolutionist’s explanation of origins and are rejecting the Bible’s explanation.
B. Why is it that so many people believe in evolution?
1. Dr. Henry Morris said, “The main reason most educated people believe in evolution is because they have been taught that most educated people believe in evolution.”
2. Dr. D.E.M.S. Watson said, “Evolution is accepted by zoologists to be true not because it has been observed to occur or can be proved by logical coherent evidence to be true, but because the only alternative, Special Creation, is clearly incredible.”
3. Some have been truly convinced that evolution is true.
a. Some have never heard that evolution is untrue.
b. Some have never seen the evidence against evolution.
C. Why is the matter of creation versus Evolution so very important?
1. The book of Genesis is the single most ridiculed book in all of the Bible…. foolish… anti-scientific… fairy tales… etc.
2. The book of Genesis if the foundation of the whole Bible.
a. Where we came from.
b. Why we are here.
c. Where we are going.
3. If we cannot believe the book of Genesis, we cannot believe any of the Bible.
a. John 3:12
b. John 5:46-47
c. Every writer of the New Testament has quoted from the book of Genesis.
DISCUSSION:
A. THERE ARE TWO BASIC IDEAS FOR THE ORIGIN OF THE UNIVERSE
1. The Creation Model
a. The universe it not self-contained
b. Everything in the universe, and the universe itself, came into being through the design, purpose, and deliberate action of a supernatural creator, God.
2. The Evolution Model
a. The universe is self-contained
b. The origin of the universe is explained solely on chance, time, and a continuing natural process
c. They believe, in simple form, that something at one time came from nothing…. the big bang
B. EVOLUTION IS NOT IN THE REALM OF SCIENCE
1. What is science?
a. Oxford Dictionary defines science as a “branch of study which is concerned with a connected body of demonstrated truths and observed facts ….” (Emp. added).
b. Science deals with those things that can be observed and measured by using the five senses; it knows by experimentation, observation, and recreation.
c. Science is concerned with a given system already in operation.
1) Science is powerless to explain origins
2) Science may define methods, qualities, and limits, but it cannot determine origins.
2. Thus, evolution cannot be proved scientifically.
C. THERE ARE FRAUDS IN SCIENCE
1. Many view scientists as the models of virtue in the intellectual community,
2. They are considered by many to be a priesthood in white apparel, tinkering with test tubes in the holy of holies
3. Notice these example:
a. The “Embryonic Recapitulation” Hoax
1) Ernst Heinrich (1834-1919) a German biologist received much fame as a consequence of his popularization of the so-called “recapitulation theory.”
2) This is a false theory that the development of a human embryo repeats the evolutionary stage
3) But Heinrich falsified his drawings and was exposed and convicted by a university court
4) Some modern text books still use these drawings …..
b. The Piltdown Hoax
1) In December of 1912, two men were said to have discovered the missing link, the half man-half ape …..
2) By 1950 a dating method was developed, and in 1953 it was determined that this Piltdown man was a hoax.
3) They had taken the skull of a human (2,000 years old) and had attached the jaw of a modern monkey with human teeth inserted and called it the missing link
3. There is an important lesson we need to learn here. We do not need to be intimidated by the so-called “discoveries” of the unbelieving world. Not all “discoveries” are faked, of course, but they are often subject to the interpretation of the discoverer.
D. THE AGE OF THE EARTH
1. The most important thing for the evolutionist is TIME and lots of it.
a. The evolutionists blatantly assert that the earth is billions of years old
b. They are forced into this assertion, for without eons of time at their disposal, evolution is IMPOSSIBLE!
2. Let us consider some obstacles that scientists have in trying to ascertain the age of the earth.
a. There are no scientific methods which can “prove” in any absolute sense the age of the earth
b. All scientific datings are based on certain assumptions, for who was there in the beginning to start the clock?
c. Things necessary for an accurate timer
1) Readable units and understandable scales
2) It must be accurate, whether in millions of years or fractions of seconds
3) We must know when the timer was started, and what was the reading when it started
4) Must run at a uniform rate
5) Must not have been disturbed in any way
d. Needless to say the alleged “scientific chrononmeters” of the evolutionist do not meet these basic standards.
4. Consider something that our science books do not tell us
a. Our text books tell us that the scientific texts have shown the earth to be billions of years old.
b. Did you know that there are over 75 scientific methods which indicate the earth to be relatively young? why are these not mentioned in our textbooks? The answer is obvious!
5. How old, then, is the earth?
a. Science cannot tell us!!!
b. Any available information must come from “the Book” which the Creator of this marvelous planet has given
c. First, it needs to be observed that there is no passage in the Bible which states precisely (in years) the age of the earth.
1) This does not mean that a relative approximation of the earth’s age cannot be ascertained.
2) It merely means that we will have to use the pertinent biblical data to establish the relative age of the earth – to arrive at a figure which is fairly close.
d. How old is the earth?
1) The earth is 5 days older than Adam
2) Genesis 1; Exodus 20:11; Matthew 19:4; Mark 10:16
e. According to the data found in the biblical genealogies, which extend from Jesus back to Adam (Luke 3:23ff), the earth is shown to be about 10,000 years old
6. The concept of “apparent age”
a. How old was Adam when he was created? …. 2 seconds
b. How old did he look when he was created? …. old enough to procreate
c. In principle this applies to all of creation; though newly created, it must have an apparent age.
d. Consider this: “How would God create anything without it having the appearance of some age???
