Why Should We Study The Bible?
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles Tags: Bible Lessons on Bible StudyThe primary reason for studying the Bible is because it is a command from God (2 Timothy 2:15 ASV). The following are additional reasons as to why we should study the Bible:
- That we may live spiritually by being born anew by God’s word (cf. Luke 8:11; 1 Peter 1:23). Unless one is born anew, he cannot enter the kingdom of heaven (John 3:1-5).
- That we may grow spiritually (1 Peter 2:1-2; 2 Peter 3:18).
- That we may be able to resist the darts and arrows of Satan as our Lord did (Ephesians 6:16; cf. Matthew 4:1-11).
- That we may have the power to serve and evangelize (Romans 1:16; cf. Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16).
- That we may have safe guidance through the pitfalls of life (Psalm 119:105; John 8:12; 1 John 1:5; cf. 2 Corinthians 4:1-6).
- That we might guard ourselves from a contagious disease – sin (Psalm 37:31; Psalm 119:11).
- To eliminate worldly poison from our hearts (1 John 2:15-17; John 15:3; 1 Peter 1:22). God’s word is our antibiotic because His word is pure (Psalm 19:8). Thus, sin and the Word cannot dwell in the same heart. When one enters, the other must depart.
- That we may bear spiritual fruit (John 15:1-5; cf. Psalm 1:1-3; Gal. 5:22-23). Without Bible study, our lives are barren (John 15:6; cf. Matthew 3:10; Matthew 7:19).
- That we may grow into the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:18; cf. Romans 8:29; Gal. 2:20).
- That we may look forward to our future home in the beauties of heaven (John 14:1-4; cf. 1 Peter 1:3-4; Revelation 21).
