What Is Our Reaction To The Gospel Of Christ?
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesThe ancient theologian, Origen, once stated, “The same sun that melts the wax hardens the clay” (Origen On First Principles 3.1.11 – source). Similarly, the preaching of the gospel softens the hearts of some, but hardens the hearts of others (2 Corinthians 2:15-16; cf. Acts 13:44-45; Acts 13:46-48).
A good Bible example of the hardening and softening effect, is seen in the reaction of the two thieves who were on crosses with Jesus (Mark 15:27). One was not touched as he witnessed the suffering and dying Savior, for he continued to multiply his sins by railing on the Lord (Luke 23:39).
He refused to listen to the pleas of his fellow thief, facing death with an hardened and impenitent heart.
The other thief is moved and touched by the sight of the suffering Savior. He rebuked his dying comrade, acknowledged his own sinfulness, proclaimed the innocence of the Lord, and made a humble plea to the Lord to remember him (Luke 23:40-42).
Thus, he went to his death with the kind of heart that brings marvelous and glorious rewards (Luke 23:43; cf. Romans 2:6-7,10).
Let us ask ourselves this question, “What is our reaction to the gospel of Christ?” Is our heart touched by the sacrifice of our Savior, motivating us to do His Father’s will (Matthew 7:21), or is our heart hardened through the deceitfulness of sin? (Hebrews 3:13).
Let’s think about it and make any necessary attitude adjustments.
