We've Got To Keep “Movin' On”
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesAs individual members in the Lord’s church, we must keep “movin’ on” to greater accomplishments, never being content with how far we’ve come with past accomplishments (Philippians 3:13-14).
If we do not continue to have some direction, purpose, or plan in mind, we will never go anywhere, and thus become unproductive citizens in the Lord’s kingdom (John 15:2; John 15:6).
However, as critical as commitment and proper direction are, they are worthless if they are not consistently pursued (Acts 14:22; cf. Acts 11:23; Acts 13:43).
When the Hebrew writer addressed his Christian readers in the first century, it was to move them on beyond the foundation of first principles (Hebrews 6:1-2). Sufficient time had elapsed when they should have gone on beyond the milk to the meat of the Word (Hebrews 5:11-14).
To remain where they were, spiritually speaking, meant they were losing ground. Brethren, if we’re not going forward doing the Lord’s will and work, we’re going backward (cf. Jeremiah 7:23-24). There’s really no such thing as “just keeping house” in the Lord’s kingdom (cf. Revelation 3:1-3).
As the Lord’s people, we have tremendous opportunities existing in our current culture and time. We must utilize the open doors of opportunity that God has provided us. We have visitors virtually every week attending congregations of the Lord’s church throughout the world.
We need to be “movin’ on” with a greater sense of urgency to reach those who manifest interest in spiritual things. Individually, each of us need to be growing toward spiritual maturity in Christ (cf. Ephesians 4:13-15; Colossians 1:27-29; 2 Timothy 3:16-17).
As individual congregations, we have challenges before us this year to:
- Help support more preachers of the Word (1 Corinthians 9:6-14).
- Persuade more lost people to obey the gospel in our communities (2 Corinthians 5:11; cf. Acts 19:8; Acts 28:23).
- Teach our children about the Savior (Deuteronomy 6:2; cf. Matthew 19:14; 2 Timothy 3:14-15).
- Build stronger congregations, and create a greater unity among believers (2 Thessalonians 1:3; Ephesians 4:11-13).
We’ve come a long way, brethren, but we’ve got to keep “movin’ on” — or like water, we will become stagnant, eventually drying up.
