SUBJECT: Discipleship

TITLE: To Be A Disciple

PROPOSITION:In order to be a disciple, we must display the characteristics of discipleship. In this lesson we will look at some of those characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: That each would have a better understanding of what it means to be a disciple.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Luke 9:23-27

2. About the Text:

1) We have in these verses a familiar passage to us.

2) The verses talk about the price of discipleship.

3) To be Christ’s disciple we must be willing to take up our cross and follow in his footsteps.

4) What does this entail?

5) Let’s look at a few verses that teach us more about discipleship.

3. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: A disciple is one who…

I.   Is a Christian

1. Acts 11:26 ?And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.?

2. In order to be a disciple, we must be a Christian, a child of God.

3. In order to become a Christian we must…

1) Hear (Romans 10:17)

2) Believe (Hebrews 11:6)

3) Repent (Acts 17:30)

4) Confess (Romans 10:10)

5) Be baptized (Acts 2:38)

4. After this we begin to live the life of a disciple.

II.  Follows

1. Consider Matthew 8:18-22 ?18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side. And a certain scribe came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.?

2. Jesus defines what it means to follow in these verses.

3. It means that we will have to make sacrifices.

1) Of personal comfort.

2) Of family relationships.

4. To be a disciple of Jesus we must follow Him.

III. Learns

1. John 6:45 ?It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.?

2. In order to come to Jesus and be his disciple we must learn from him.

3. And we learn in order to do.

4. Consider Philippians 4:9 ?Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.?

IV.  Is Humble

1. Matthew 10:24 – The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.?

2. John 13:14-15 ?If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another?s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.?

3. James 4:10 – Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.?

V.   Seeks

1. A disciple seeks the things his Teacher wants him to seek.

2. Matthew 6:33 – But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.?

VI.  Worships

1. With the church. Acts 20:7 ?And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.?

2. The disciples seeks to worship God in spirit and in truth. John 4:23-24 ?But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.?

3. The disciple knows that God is worthy of worship. Revelation 4:11 – Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.?

VII. Gives.

1. When there is a need. Consider Acts 11:29 ?Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:?

2. This was the initial purpose for the general collection recorded in 1 Corinthians 16:1-2.

VIII.Participates

1. Acts 2:42 ?And they continued stedfastly in the apostles? doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.?

2. The word ?fellowship? here comes from the Greek word Koinonia and has the basic idea of participating with one another.

3. Hebrews 13:16 ?But to do good and to communicate (fellowship/participate) forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.?

IX.  Is Hospitable

1. Acts 21:16 ?There went with us also certain of the disciples of Caesarea, and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge.?

2. 1 Peter 4:9 Practice ?hospitality one to another without grudging.?

3. Hospitality is the ancient art of showing kindness to strangers and to our friends.

X.   Loves

1. John 13:34-35 ?34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.?

2. 1 Corinthians 13:1-8

3. In verse 8 Paul sums up by saying that love never fails.

4. Here is the essential attribute to being a disciple.

5. If we have love for one another then all of these others things will happen due to that love.

6. Let us then resolve to love as Christ has loved us.

CONCLUSION:

1. There are many things that we must have within our lives to be disciples.

2. Love is the foundational principle.

3. Upon that all the rest is built.

4. Invitation
