“Think And Do”

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

A common sign in offices and factories a few years ago was the simple word, “Think.” This sign stimulated efficiency and ingenuity. The Bible has a greater sign. It says,” Think and Do.”

The apostle Paul said:

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.” (Philippians 4:8-9 KJV).

What could be more important to the Christian than the knowledge that the God of peace is with him? It is a reality when we “think and do.” We are to think on anything, just as long as it is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and of good repute. Anything which does not measure up to these qualifications, is not worth our meditation. All of the word of God measures up. That is why the Psalmist said the blessed man meditates in God’s law “day and night” (Psalm 1:2).

When one has spent time in thinking about the really worthwhile things, he is only half through. Paul said that when we have learned, received, heard and seen the good things, it is up to us to incorporate them into our daily activities.

The next time we see one of those signs that says, “Think,” remember that it is scriptural. But most of all, remember the part that is not often printed. The Christian’s exhortation is to both “Think and Do.”
