The Universe — By Accident Or Design?

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

The opening statement in Genesis reads: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). How simple these words, and yet how fathomless!

Using his power of observation, a renowned scientist once wrote that nature’s laws are marked by “the greatest mathematical simplicity and beauty.” While I am certainly not a scientist, I agree with his statement. If there is no Designer or Creator — how is it that our universe is a law-abiding system marked by beauty and simplicity instead of chaos?

The only reasonable explanation is the God of the Bible. As Paul tells us in Romans 1:20:

Since the creation of the world His [God’s] invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that [we] are without excuse.”

If it’s only the reality of God’s existence that explains the whole universe, that must also be true of our lives (cf. Acts 17:25; Daniel 5:22-23; Job 33:4; Isaiah 42:5). We are not accidents but creatures designed by a Maker of limitless power and wisdom (Zechariah 12:1; Isaiah 57:16; Job 12:9-10). Let us look for Him in what He has created and designed — we’ll see Him there (Romans 1:19-20; Acts 14:15-17; cf. Psalm 147:7-8; Jeremiah 14:22).
