The Music Won't Last

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

In the fast-paced society that we find ourselves in, have we ever stopped for a few moments and listened to the falling rain, or smelled the fresh air that follows it? Have we ever enjoyed the beauty and tranquility of a sunset? Have we ever experienced the peacefulness of the early morning hours; been awed by the rising sun; rejoiced at the singing of the birds? Have we ever taken the time to smell the beautiful flowers around our neighborhood — even picking a few along the way?

If we haven’t experienced any of the above lately, perhaps we need to slow down our hectic pace, and listen to the beautiful music of life (John 10:10; Acts 14:17; Acts 17:25; James 1:17), for our time on earth is short — the music won’t last (Luke 12:13-21; cf. Ecclesiastes 2:1-16).

Do we find ourselves running through each day on the fly? Do we rush up to the next stop sign or light, having to quickly apply our brakes (it takes a toll on brake shoes and drums, you know). Are we really accomplishing a lot by all of this rushing around, or are we just simply in a “busy” rut? I know in our local school district, I see a lot of activity [busyness], but very little progress.

When our day is done, are we still thinking about the next set of chores to be done tomorrow? If we do, perhaps we need to slow down a bit and take the time to help life sing its song, for our time on earth is short — the music won’t last (Hebrews 9:27; James 4:13-16).

When our son asks us to play a game of catch, do we tell him, “No son, we’ll do it tomorrow, I’m too busy today,” and then not notice that his heart is broken because of our “busyness”? Because we’re so busy, have we lost touch with a long-time friend? Are we guilty of allowing a friendship to die because we thought we were just too “busy” to write a simple card of encouragement or pick up a telephone receiver?

If we have, perhaps we need to show down and take the time to help life sing its song, for our time on earth is short — the music won’t last (Job 7:6-9; Job 9:25-26).

When we run so fast to get somewhere [actually nowhere], we miss half the fun of getting there. Why do we needlessly worry and hurry through our day? Think about this: A life that is hurried through, is like an unopened gift, thrown away — wasted —lost.

Folks, this life was never meant to be a race, always in competition with other racers. Each day that God has so graciously granted us, is not a day granted just to see how rapidly we can rush through it to get ahead of the other fellow, but how we can help someone along life‘s way (1 Corinthians 9:19-27; cf. Luke 10:25-37; Acts 10:38; 1 John 3:17-18).

Brethren and friends, the advice of this writer is simple: Let’s slow down and enjoy each precious moment of life that God has given us (Genesis 2:7; Job 33:4). Take the time to help life sing its song, closely listening to its beautiful music, for our time on earth is short — the music won’t last (2 Timothy 4:6-8).
