The Inevitability Of Change
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles, uncategorizedChange is one thing we can be certain of in this life. Our relationships change as we move to new places, experience illness, and ultimately face death (Hebrews 9:27). Even the cells in our bodies are always in the process of change. For example, when our skin cells wear out, they are replaced by new ones. In fact, we shed and regenerate outer skin cells about every 27 or so days.
In Henry Lyte’s hymn “Abide With Me,” there is a melancholy line that says, “Change and decay in all around I see.” But then he immediately adds, “O Thou who changest not, abide with me!”
Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can have a relationship with the unchanging God who says of Himself in Malachi 3:6 – NKJV, “I am the Lord, I do not change.” We can depend on God to be the same forever, as the psalmist declares in Psalm 102:27.
The Hebrew writer adds this reassuring testimony in Hebrews 13:8 – NKJV when he states: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” He is our firm foundation, who can give us confidence and security in this ever-changing world.
As creatures of change, caught up in the ever swirling tide of time, we can rest our souls on the stability of our unchanging Lord (Psalm 102:25-27 – NKJV).
