Some Lessons From The Psalms
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesThere are many spiritual lessons that we as Christians can learn from a study of the Psalms. The following are some lessons that we as God’s children can learn from studying this marvelous book of God’s servant, David:
1) God is “holy” (Psalm 99:3,5,9), therefore we should be “holy” (1 Peter 1:15-16).
2) As God’s children, we should “thirst” for God (Psalm 42:2; Psalm 63:1; Matthew 5:6).
3) We should praise the Lord among the people and sing unto Him among the nations because of His great mercy and truth (Psalm 57:9-10; 2 Corinthians 1:3-4).
4) We should express “joy” in God’s house (Psalm 122:1; Gal. 5:22; Hebrews 10:25).
5) We should realize the presence of God in our lives (Psalm 23; Psalm 91; Matthew 28:20; Romans 8:35-39).
6) We should demonstrate our love for God’s Word (Psalm 119; Matthew 5:14-16; Colossians 3:16).
7) We should be thankful for God’s care and provision (Psalm 65:9; Psalm 121; 1 Peter 5:7).
8) We can take refuge in God (Psalm 46:1,7,11; Colossians 1:9-13).
9) We learn about the “suffering” Savior (Psalm 22); the conquering King (Psalm 2; Psalm 72; Psalm 110) and that we should be a “willing” volunteer in His army (Psalm 110:3; Ephesians 6:10-18).
10) We need to be a part of the growing kingdom of God and “Say among the heathen that the Lord reigneth” (Psalm 96:10) because the Lord “shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with His truth” (Psalm 96:13; John 12:48-50).
11) We need to be always willing to confess sin in our lives (Psalm 32:5; Psalm 51:3; 1 John 1:8-10) and to seek God’s forgiveness (Psalm 51:1-2; Luke 18:13) in order to “conquer” sin (Psalm 130:7-8; 1 John 1:9).
12) We need never have doubts about God’s dealing with the wicked (Psalm 37:7-10; Rev. 21:8).
13) If we will trust in the Lord, He will protect us from those that would harm us (Psalm 31:11-20).
14) If we in the day of trouble “seek” the Lord and “remember” Him, He will deliver us (Psalm 77:1-20).
15) The Lord’s people should not fear physical death because He will deliver our soul from death (Psalm 116:1-8; 1 Corinthians 15:54-57).
16) If we remain “faithful” to the Lord, God will be “faithful” to give us the “victory” over our enemies (Psalm 31:23; Psalm 60:12; Psalm 89; 1 Corinthians 15:55-57).
17) Those who “abide” in God’s tabernacle are those who “walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart” (Psalm 15:1-2).
18) We must have a “child-like” faith in order to be pleasing to God (Psalm 131:2; Hebrews 11:6).
19) As brethren, we must always “dwell together in unity” in order to attain the Lord’s blessing of eternal life (Psalm 133:1-3; Hebrews 13:1).
20) We must trust in God “if” we want to receive strength, prosperity, and long life (Psalm 52:8).
21) We will be “blessed” if we help the poor (Psalm 41:1-3).
22) All kings shall fall down before God and “all nations shall serve him” (Psalm 72:11).
23) God will “stand at the right hand of the poor” and will save them from those who will slanderously condemn their soul (Psalm 109:31).
24) We should “hate” the attitude of those who live contrary to the Lord and His teachings (Psalm 139:21-22).
25) “If a man die, shall he live again?” (Job 14:14). God’s answer is “Yes”! (Psalm 16:8-11; Psalm 17:13-15; Psalm 49:15; Psalm 73:23-26; John 11:25-26).
26) To behold God’s face after death is “better” than worldly prosperity (Psalm 17:13-15).
27) “God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for He shall receive me.” (Psalm 49:15; John 14:1-3).
Conclusion:
When we consider the many spiritual lessons learned from a study of the Psalms, we are so greatly humbled that God so bountifully loves us and is “mindful” of us (Psalm 8:3-9; Psalm 144:3). Let us as His people always give Him our utmost “praise” and “honor” (Psalm 8:3-9; Psalm 144:3; Psalm 145:1-5).
