SUBJECT: Attitudes

TITLE: Christian Contentment

PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will look at the subject of contentment. We want to look at what contentment is not and then look at what it is. Contentment is not conceit. Contentment is not laziness. Contentment is not being self-satisfied. Contentment is living within one’s means. Contentment is being happy regardless of one’s situation. Contentment is the peaceful self-assurance of salvation.

OBJECTIVES: Each hearer should be able to practice contentment, recognize when others are not content, and be able to discuss Christian contentment with others.

AIM: That each would understand more about contentment and be able to make application to their life.

INTRODUCTION:

A. The Bible clearly teaches that a Christian:

1. Is saved – Acts 2:47

2. And has eternal life – John 3:36

B. But the Bible also teaches that heaven is yet future

2. The Christian lives in hope of eternal life (Tit. 1:2)

C. There is no contradiction in these verses

1. God’s promises do not have to be inevitable to be certain

1. The Kingdom of Judah had trusted in its idols for protection.

2. Sennacherib points out that he had defeated all the kingdoms with greater idols than Judah.

1) He defeated Babylon and Egypt.

2) He defeated Syria and then Samaria.

TITLE: What is Christian Baptism?

PROPOSITION:In this lesson we want to look at the question, “What is Christian Baptism?” We will note that Christian baptism is: 1) A burial in water. 2) An action of faith. 3) God’s work of righteousness.

OBJECTIVES:Everyone needs to be able to discuss what baptism is in relationship to the plan of salvation. Not many in the religious world today understand it. But it is part of the great commission and we must preach and teach it.

AIM: To encourage the brethren to teach others about Christian baptism.

A. A hungry tiger started tracking the scent of a deer. As he followed the deer, he came across the scent of a rabbit. He turned aside and started after the rabbit. Then he was distracted by the scent of a mouse and started following that. He finally came to the hole into which the mouse had vanished. He ended the day hungrier than when he had started the day. This fable illustrates how many spend their lives distracted with this or that, and at the end of the day – they have accomplished little.

B. In Philippians 3:10-16 we find a focus for one’s life – a spiritual focus

PROPOSITION: To be a child of God is to have the blessing of: 1) Forgiveness, 2) Family 3) A Father 4) Felicity.

OBJECTIVE: That each would be encouraged in knowing that they are children of God.

Aim: To use fatherhood as an illustration of what it means to be a child of God.

TITLE: Before the Throne

PROPOSITION: When we come before the throne we see that 1) Beauty is Defined, 2) God is Exalted, 3) Holiness is Honored, 4) Praise is Lifted, 5) Man is Humbled, 6) Authority is Respected, 7) Worship is Consummated.

OBJECTIVE: The listener should be keenly aware of the throne room of God and what happens when we enter that throne room.

Aim: To fix within our hearts the proper attitude that we ought to have when we come before the Father’s throne to worship.

PROPOSITION: To set forth the parable of the two debtors as it describes ourselves.

OBJECTIVE: To help us more clearly define our own position in relation to God’s forgiveness and the necessity for it, and to love God and others more.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Because the Pharisee who invited Jesus to supper was thinking badly of Jesus, the Lord told this parable.

SUBJECT: Salvation

TITLE: The Parable of Laborers in the Vineyard

PROPOSITION: In this passage we find 1) A Hiring, 2) A Payment, 3) A Complaint, 4) A Response 5) An Interpretation.

OBJECTIVE: To understand what the expression, “The first shall be last and the last shall be first” means.

SUBJECT: Faith, Trust, Jesus

TITLE: “‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus”

PROPOSITION: We need to learn more about trusting in Jesus. What is trust? Why is it sweet? And Why should we trust Jesus?

Objectives: We should all know how to answers these questions so that we can tell others about trusting in Jesus.

Aim: We need to be able to explain to others what it means to trust in Jesus and why.

TITLE:  THE SIN OF CAIN

TEXT:   GENESIS 4:1-16

THESIS: The purpose of this sermon is to note Cain’s negative example and to take warning from it.
