SUBJECT: Unity in the Church

TITLE: Unity Sermon – The Fundamentals of Unity in the Church

PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will look at Ephesians 4:1-4 as this passage teaches the following: 1) The Prerequisites of unity. 2) The Principles of Unity 3) The Plan of Unity 4) The Purpose of Unity.

OBJECTIVES: Each hearer should be able to state what the basics of unity are from these verses.

AIM: To help each individual understand the importance of maintaining unity in the church.

SUBJECT: Prayer

TITLE: Why does the Psalmist cry?

PROPOSITION: The Psalmist cries because of 1) Sickness and Suffering, 2) The Persecution of Evil Men, 3) His Sins and For His Forgiveness, 4) His Desire to Worship God.

OBJECTIVE: That we would each be like the Psalmist in deeply desiring God to hear our requests and answer them.

The Holy Spirit has a unique role in the godhead. Each listener should be able to describe the role of the Holy Spirit in scripture.

Introduction: Mark 1:12-13

1. Jesus is driven into the wilderness by the Spirit of God.

2. He is to undergo a period of testing.

3. This testing reveals the character of our Lord

1) like concrete is tested.

2) like automobiles are tested.

3) like soldiers are tested.

INTRODUCTION: Read Gen. 3:1-24

A. Have you ever wondered how one could allow a moment of pleasure to destroy his/her reputation?

1. What causes one to mortgage his life to pay the high price of sin?

2. What causes one to turn his back on God, his family or his brethren?

3. Genesis 3 will give us some insight into these questions

B. The Bible is a book about sin.

1. Genesis 1 & 2 sets forth man in his innocence.

2. The remaining 1,187 chapters depict man as a sinner, and as one who is in need of grace – the salvation that can only be found in Christ.

3. In this lesson I want us to go back in our minds to the garden of Eden, to a time when sin first entered the world, and notice some very important points that will help us in our daily walk as a Christian.

INTRODUCTION: Read John 4:24

A. The worship of God in Spirit and in truth is a matter of great importance and great significance, as is clearly seen in God’s word.

1. Jesus taught on worship (John 4:19-26)

2. Paul, on Mars Hill, preached on worship (Acts 17:22-31)

3. The second recorded controversy between God and man was over worship (Gen. 4)

4. The word “worship” is found 119 times in the Bible

SUBJECT: Christian Attitudes

TITLE: Attitudes of the Chosen Generation

Type: Topical/Expository

PROPOSITION: To have the attitude of the chosen generation, we must 1) Be proactive 2) Be positive 3) Be Humble.

OBJECTIVES: The hearer should be able to understand and show proactivity, confidence, and humility in a balanced manner.

AIM: I want the listener to be motivated to service in a proactive, confident, but humble way.

INTRODUCTION:

SUBJECT: Jesus

TITLE: “I am the Good Shepherd”

PROPOSITION: The Good Shepherd cares for the sheep by 1) Warning them concerning dangers to the flock, 2) Guarding the entrance and exit to the fold, and 3) Laying down His life for the sheep.

OBJECTIVES: Each listener should be able to state how the Good Shepherd warns concerning dangers to the flock, guards the entrance and exit to the fold, and lays down His life for the sheep.

AIM: To emphasize our constant need to be vigilant against the enemy by following the Good Shepherd.

TITLE: The Christian Soldier

INTRODUCTION: Ephesians 6:10-20

A. A Christian’s efforts to live faithfully in this life is described in various terms throughout the New Testament:

1. As a walk and as running a race

2. But the one use most often is that of “warfare.”

B. One of the greatest texts on Spiritual warfare is found in Ephesians 6:10-20.

DISCUSSION:

A. THE CHRISTIAN SOLDIER’S CHARGE

Sermon on the Betrayal of Jesus

INTRODUCTION: John 18:1-11

A. Think how it would hurt to be betrayed by a friend and arrested on false charges.

1. I’ve never been arrested, but I’ve been betrayed by people I care about.

2. It is painful and discouraging.

3. It has been said that those who hurt us the most are those closest to us.

B. My experience doesn’t even compare, however, to the betrayal and arrest of Jesus.

1. We often concentrate on His death, burial, and resurrection – and rightly so

2. But from His betrayal and arrest there is a wealth of information about the knowledge and wisdom of God, the utter sinfulness of man, and the sacrificial love of Jesus.

TITLE: Uses for the Old Covenant

PROPOSITION: In this lesson we want to focus upon some uses of the Old Covenant, namely: 1) It is for our learning, 2) It provides wisdom, 3) It warns us regarding sin, 4) It helps us understand the New Covenant.

OBJECTIVES: Each person should understand why we study the Old Covenant.

AIM: To help all understand that as Christians, we must study the Old Covenant.

INTRODUCTION: Read 1 Corinthians 4:6

1. In dealing with the Corinthian brethren’s tendency to render judgment upon one another based on the wisdom of men Paul gives a basic principle that needs to be heeded today as much as ever.

2. The need for this principle is seen in the great division in the religious world today.

3. The principle implies this:

1) God’s written word is FINAL on any matter it teaches. John 17:17

2) The wisdom of man is insufficient. Jeremiah 10:23

4. To understand why we must not go beyond what is written we must understand:

1) The nature of what is written.

2) The effects of going beyond what is written.

3) The rewards of not going beyond what is written.

B. A few weeks ago we began talking about the church moving forward into the future, and things we must consider so we can effectively do God’s will.
