Women Who Worked for God

SUBJECT: Work, Woman’s Role

TITLE: Women Who Worked for God

PROPOSITION: In this lesson we’ll look at different women that worked for God and think about their character in that work.

OBJECTIVE: To encourage and motivate our women to be like the women who worked for God.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Acts 17:4, 12

2. About the Text:

1) Women played a significant role in the early church.

2) While we don’t know who the women specifically were at Philippi or Thessalonica, we know that they composed a good sized part of the congregation.

3) In Jesus ministry as well, women played a great role.

4) Women were the first humans to witness that Jesus had been resurrected from the dead.

5) While we don’t have a lot of detail about many of them, we know there were some women that worked for God.

DISCUSSION: When I think of women who worked for God, I think of…

I.   Sarah in Service

1. Recall Genesis 18.

2. Consider also 1 Peter 3:1-6

II.  Deborah in Counsel

1. Recall Judges 4.

2. Deborah was a judge and prophetess in Israel

3. She counseled Barak as he battled Sisera.

4. And Israel overcome their army.

III. Hannah in Devotion

1. Recall 1 Samuel 1-2

2. Hannah had no children.

3. She prayed to the Lord and devoted her firstborn to Him.

4. Samuel was born.

IV.  Widow of Zarephath in Hospitality

1. Recall 1 Kings 17:9ff

2. Due to the drought there was a famine.

3. The widow only had a small amount of food left.

4. But she shared it with Elijah and was rewarded for it.

V.   Mary in Priorities

1. Recall Luke 10:38-42.

2. Mary understood what was important.

3. Jesus praised her for it.

VI.  Dorcas in Charity

1. Recall Acts 9:36ff.

2. Dorcas was kind and did good things for others.

3. She took care of widows.

VII. Lois and Eunice in Parenting

1. Recall 2 Timothy 1:5.

2. Timothy’s mother and grandmother raised him to be faithful.

3. What a tribute to his maternal parents.

CONCLUSION:

1. Here are some women that worked for God.

2. They are an example to us, both men and women, in these areas of work and service.

3. I hope they will motivate us to greater service.

4. I hope they will encourage our women to know that God sees their efforts.
