1. Rest is for the weary. Jews had days, years for themselves, servants, beasts, lands.
2. Jesus promises respite to “weary and heavy laden” in His great invitation if they will come to Him.

I. REST DURING OLD TESTAMENT DAYS. Romans 15:4
1. God rested from work. Genesis 2:1-4; Hebrews 4:11
2. Jews rested, Sabbath, etc. Exodus 20:8f; cf. Colossians 2:16
3. Israel in Canaan. Hebrews 4:8-9
II. TO WHOM IS IT PROMISED?
1. Not to the:
1) Evildoers. Numbers 26:63-65; Hebrews 3:18
2) Worshippers of “the Beast.” Rev. 14:11
3) Unbelievers. Hebrews 4:8-9
2. But to them that:
1) Fear Jehovah. Hebrews 4:1
2) Learn of Christ. Matthew 11:29
3) Come to Christ. John 6:44
4) Believe on the Lord. Hebrews 4:3, 11
5) Take His yoke upon them. Matthew 11:28-29
6) Are God’s true people. Hebrews 4:9; 2 Thessalonians 1:7
7) Die in the Lord. Rev. 14:13; cf. Matthew 10:22
III. WHEN SHALL WE ENTER IT?
1. When our work is ended. Hebrews 4:10
2. After death. Hebrews 9:27; Rev. 14:13
3. At the “Judgment.” Matthew 25:31-41
CONCLUSION: In this sermon on rest in the Lord we conclude:
