Sermon on Power in Prayer – Sermon outline by G. E. Watkins on the very basic but sometimes forgotten things that prayer is designed to do: praise and magnify God, gain forgiveness for Christians, receive our daily bread and aid in the spread of the Gospel.

TITLE: Sermon on Power in Prayer | What Can Prayer Truly Do?

Introduction:

1. Prayer is a fundamental matter in living the Christian life.

2. Many have distorted it and made it to be a health and wealth scheme.

3. Others, both Christians and non, are unconvinced of the power of prayer. (They didn’t get what they asked for or they don’t believe in God at all.)

4. So we ask the question, WHAT CAN PRAYER DO? While there may be many purposes for a thing, learning the essential purposes is paramount.

5. For prayer, the essential purposes are these:

1) To praise and magnify God.

2) To gain forgiveness.

3) To receive our daily bread.

4) To aid in the spread of the Gospel.

Discussion: In this sermon on power in prayer we ask, What Can Prayer Do?

I.   There is Power in Prayer to Praise and Magnify God

1. Hallowed be thy name, Matt. 6:9. Hallowed = revered, holy.

2. Expressed by Paul when writing about his conversion, 1 Tim. 1:17.

3. Includes the matter of thanksgiving, Eph. 5:20.

II.  There is Power in Prayer to Gain Forgiveness for Christians

1. Christians are going to sin, 1 John 1:8; 1 John 2:1

2. Peter’s instruction to a Christian caught in sin, Acts 8:22.

3. John’s instruction, 1 John 1:9.

4. Prayer is where the blood is applied once again and our souls are cleansed.

III. There is Power in Prayer to Receive Our Daily Bread

1. Jesus taught us to pray for it, Matt. 6:11.

2. God shall supply, Php. 4:19.

3. Daily bread comes from the Father, James 1:17; Matt. 6:33; Psa. 37:25.

IV.  Aid in the Spread of the Gospel.

1. Jesus’ aim in coming to this earth was to seek and save the lost, Luke 19:10.

2. Pray for laborers, Luke 10:2.

3. Pray that the word may have free course, 2 Thess. 3:1.

4. Pray for boldness, Eph. 6:19-20; Acts 4:29;

Conclusion: In this sermon on power in prayer we have asked, What Can Prayer Do?

1. It is of primary service in the most important areas of life and existence, time and eternity.

1) Praising and magnifying God.

2) Petitioning for Forgiveness.

3) Providing our daily bread.

4) Spreading the Gospel.
