4. So we ask the question, WHAT CAN PRAYER DO? While there may be many purposes for a thing, learning the essential purposes is paramount.
5. For prayer, the essential purposes are these:
1) To praise and magnify God.
2) To gain forgiveness.
3) To receive our daily bread.
4) To aid in the spread of the Gospel.

I. There is Power in Prayer to Praise and Magnify God
1. Hallowed be thy name, Matt. 6:9. Hallowed = revered, holy.
2. Expressed by Paul when writing about his conversion, 1 Tim. 1:17.
3. Includes the matter of thanksgiving, Eph. 5:20.
II. There is Power in Prayer to Gain Forgiveness for Christians
1. Christians are going to sin, 1 John 1:8; 1 John 2:1
2. Peter’s instruction to a Christian caught in sin, Acts 8:22.
3. John’s instruction, 1 John 1:9.
4. Prayer is where the blood is applied once again and our souls are cleansed.
III. There is Power in Prayer to Receive Our Daily Bread
1. Jesus taught us to pray for it, Matt. 6:11.
2. God shall supply, Php. 4:19.
3. Daily bread comes from the Father, James 1:17; Matt. 6:33; Psa. 37:25.
