Proverbially Speaking

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

From the 2009, volume 47, number 1 edition of The Sword and Staff Publication, pg. 2, comes the following proverbs of wisdom (appropriate Scriptures and related articles have been added):

  • Trust is a “must” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
  • People who know the most, know how little they really know (2 Timothy 3:7).
  • Jesus said, “Before Abraham was, I Am” (Genesis 1:26; Exodus 3:13-15; cf. John 1:1-3; John 8:56-59; John 14:8-9; John 17:5; Colossians 2:8-9).
  • When we study to show ourselves approved (2 Timothy 2:15), many times, we find ourselves reproved (2 Timothy 3:16).
  • The closer we get to a person, the more clearly can we see what they look like and the more distinctly hear what they have to say; this is likewise true with the Lord (Matthew 17:5; cf. Hebrews 1:1-2).
  • Victory is won over sin, not by suppressing our evil thoughts, but by expelling them far from us (2 Corinthians 10:5).
  • Is an apple tree an apple tree because of the kind of fruit it bears, or is it an apple tree because it is the kind of tree that bears that kind of fruit? (Genesis 1:11-12; cf. Matthew 12:33; Luke 6:44).
  • We must face up to ourselves when we come face to face with Christ (Romans 14:10; 2 Corinthians 5:10).
  • Are we righteous because of the fruit we bear, or because we are the kind of tree that bears that fruit? (John 15:7-8).
  • Don’t “give in” when you “give out” and then “give up” (2 Timothy 4:6-8).
