SUBJECT: Prophecy
TITLE: Messianic Prophecies Fulfilled
PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will look at Old Testament prophecies regarding the Messiah quoted in the New Testament as being fulfilled. We will look at prophecies regarding the Messiah’s 1) Origins, 2) Ministry and Teaching, 3) Persecution and Death, 4) Triumph, 5) and eternal role in heaven.
Objectives: Each should understand the Messianic prophecies as fulfilled by Jesus and as quoted in the New Testament.
Aim: To show that Jesus fulfilled the Messianic prophecies that we may have renewed confidence that Jesus is the Messiah.
INTRODUCTION:
1. Read: Luke 24:25-27
2. About the Text:
1) After Jesus’ resurrection he appeared to two men on the road to Emmaus.
2) They spoke with him, not knowing who he was.
3) They were discouraged because they thought Jesus was the Messiah and since his crucifixion they doubted.
4) Jesus opened the scriptures to them to teach them how all things were fulfilled.
5) When they arrived in Emmaus, he sat to eat with them and they knew who he was.
6) The fulfillment of the scriptures gave them renewed confidence in Jesus as Messiah.
3. Two kinds of prophecies.
1) There are the kinds of prophecies that we generally understand to be “prophetic.”
a. Psalm 22
b. Isaiah 53
c. The miracle in these prophecies of Jesus is the foreknowledge.
2) There is, however, the kind of prophecy that was under the O.T. a mystery.
a. Romans 16:25,26
b. Ephesians 3:3-5
c. The miracle in these prophecies is that only God could reveal it.

DISCUSSION:
I. Prophecies of Jesus Regarding the Origins of the Messiah.
1. Born of a virgin — Isaiah 7:14 and Matthew 1:23
2. In Bethlehem — Micah 5:2 and Matthew 2:6
3. Out of Egypt — Hosea 11:1 and Matthew 2:15
4. Out of Zion — Isaiah 59:20,21 and Romans 11:26,27.
5. He would be the first and the last — Isaiah 44:6 and Revelation 1:17
6. He would be called the Son of God —
1) Psalm 2:7 and Acts 13:33, Hebrews 1:5, Hebrews 5:5.
2) 2 Samuel 7:14 and Hebrews 1:5.
II. Prophecies of Jesus Regarding the Ministry and Teaching of the Messiah
1. He would have zeal for God’s house — Psalm 69:9 and John 2:17.
2. He would bring light to the Gentiles — Isaiah 9:1,2 and Matthew 4:15,16.
3. He would heal the sick and lame —
1) Isaiah 53:4 and Matthew 8:16, 17.
2) Isaiah 61:1,2 and Luke 4:18,19.
4. He would preach the gospel, deliverance, and the acceptable year of the Lord — Isaiah 61:1,2 and Luke 4:18,19
5. He would be gentle — Isaiah 42:1-4 and Matthew 12:18-21.
6. He would be a prophet with God’s authority — Deuteronomy 18:18-19 and Acts 3:22,23.
7. He would teach in parables — Psalm 78:2 and Matthew 13:35
8. He would be sinless — Isaiah 53:9 and 1 Peter 2:22
9. He would not be believed — Isaiah 53:1 and John 12:37,38.
10.He would be called a rock of offense — Isaiah 8:14, and 1 Peter 2:8.
III. Prophecies of Jesus Regarding the Persecution and Death of the Messiah
1. He would be reproached — Psalm 69:9 and Romans 15:3.
2. He would be hated without a cause — Psalm 69:4 and John 15:25.
3. He would be betrayed by a friend — Psalm 41:9 and John 13:18.
4. He would be opposed by kings and rulers — Psalm 2:1,2 and Acts 4:25.
5. He would be smitten — Zechariah 13:7 and Matthew 26:31, Mark 14:27.
6. He would be humiliated and killed — Isaiah 53:7,8 and Acts 8:32,33.
7. He would be sold for 30 pieces of silver — Zechariah 11:12 and Matthew 27:9.
8. They would part his garments and cast lots upon his vesture — Psalm 22:18 and Matthew 27:35, John 19:24.
9. He would be number with the transgressors — Isaiah 53:12 and Mark 15:28, Luke 22:37.
10.They would pierce him — Zechariah 12:10, Psalm 22:16 and John 19:37.
11.His bones would not be broken — Psalm 34:20, Psalm 22:17 and John 19:36.
12.That his death would be a sacrifice pleasing to God — Psalm 40:6-8 and Hebrews 10:5-9.
13.That his death would be vicarious for the sins of mankind — Isaiah 53:5 and 1 Peter 2:24
IV. Prophecies of Jesus Regarding the Triumph of the Messiah
1. He would be King — Zechariah 9:9 and Matthew 21:5.
2. He would enter Jerusalem as King — Psalm 118:26 and Matthew 21:9, Mark 11:9, Luke 19:38, John 12:13.
3. He would receive the sure mercies of David — Isaiah 55:3 and Acts 13:34.
4. He would be resurrected from death — Psalm 16:8-11 and Acts 2:25-28, Acts 13:35.
5. He would sit on the right hand of God — Psalm 110:1 and Matthew 22:44, Mark 12:36, Luke 20:42,43, Acts 2:34,35, Hebrews 1:13.
6. He would be the head cornerstone — Psalm 118:22,23 and Matthew 21:42, Mark 12:10,11, Luke 20:17, Acts 4:11, 1 Peter 2:7.
7. All the nations would trust in Him — Isaiah 11:10 and Romans 15:12.
8. All things would be put under his feet — Psalm 8:4-6 and 1 Corinthians 15:27, Hebrews 2:6-8
9. He would lead captivity captive and give gifts — Psalm 68:18 and Ephesians 4:8.
10.That every knee would bow before him (yet to be completely fulfilled) — Isaiah 45:23 and Philippians 2:10,11.
11.He will rule with a rod of iron over the nations — Psalm 2:9 and Revelation 2:27.
V. Prophecies of Jesus Regarding the Eternal Role of the Messiah
1. His throne would be forever — Psalm 45:6,7 and Hebrews 1:8,9.
2. His divinity — Psalm 102:25-27 and Hebrews 1:10-12.
3. His participation with the church — Psalm 22:22, Isaiah 8:17,18 and Hebrews 2:12-13.
4. He would be a priest after the order of Melchisedec — Psalms 109:4 and Hebrews 5:6,10 7:17,21.
5. He will further His cause for truth — Isaiah 22:22 and Revelation 3:7
6. He will be the light for all His people — Isaiah 60:20,21 and Revelation 21:23.
CONCLUSION:
1. We’ve looked at several prophecies of Jesus fulfilled.
1) His origins.
2) His ministry and teaching.
3) His persecution and death.
4) His Triumph
5) His Eternal Role in Heaven
2. What will you do with the knowledge that Jesus is the Messiah?
1) You can ignore it.
2) You can act upon it.
3. Invitation
