Pattern of Worship
SUBJECT: Gospel Meeting: Back to the Bible Pattern
TITLE: Pattern of Worship
PROPOSITION: We want to study the Pattern of Worship. Our pattern of worship must have the correct object, the correct attitudes, and the correct actions.
OBJECTIVES: Brethren should be able to explain the pattern of worship today in the church.
AIM: To impress upon each hearer the necessity of letting God define our worship.
INTRODUCTION:
1. Read: Psalm 95:6-7 “Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before Jehovah our Maker: For he is our God, And we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To-day, oh that ye would hear his voice!” ASV 1901
2. About the Text:
1) We find in this verse the correct object of our worship – Jehovah.
2) We find in this verse the correct attitude of worship – prostrating ourselves before God.
3) We find in these verses the foundation for the correct action in worship – hearing His voice!
3. Read John 4:24
1) We find the correct object of worship – God who is a Spirit.
2) We find the correct attitude of worship – Worship in spirit.
3) We find the foundation for correct action in worship – Truth.
4. Definition of worship.
1) Literally the greek word (proskuneo) means “kissing toward one in reverence.”
2) “The reverent love and allegience accorded a diety.” American Heritage Dictionary
3) “To honor or reverence a divine being .” Websters.
4) “Make obeisance to the gods or their images” Liddel and Scott Classic Greek Lexicon
5) In the New Testament, those sole actions in which the Christian engages so as to specifically show reverence, obeisance, and honor unto God and his Son Jesus the Christ.

DISCUSSION: We need to go back to the Bible Pattern
I. For our Object of Worship
1. The object of worship is not ourselves.
1) Some view worship as Pop Psychology. Many today comfort themselves with thoughts of guardian angels and such thinking that God takes care of them this way. Colossians 2:18 “Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,”
2) Some view worship as a form of personal entertainment. The psalmist writes, “O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.” Psalm 96:9. Holy worship is worship that is sanctified and set apart for the express object of God.
3) Some view worship as a form of self expression. God does not need us to express ourselves in worship. Acts 17:23-25 “For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;”
2. The object of worship is not our fellow man.
1) Some actually exalt and worship men falsely. 2 Thessalonians 2:4 “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”
2) Some view worship as a way to keep peace in the family. Psalm 22:27 “All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.”
3) Some view worship as a big social club thinking that they make the rules and regulations thereof. Matthew 15:9 “But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”
4) Some view worship as merely a way to help others with earthly problems. Then why do the angels worship God? “And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.” Hebrews 1:6.
3. The object of Worship IS God.
1) He is deserving of worship because he is holy. Psalm 99:5 “Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.”
2) Nothing else is deserving of worship. Matthew 4:10 “Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”
3) Not even angels are worthy of worship. Rev. 22:8-9 “And 1 John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.”
4) Hear the words of King Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel 3:28 “Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.”
II. For our Attitude in Worship
1. We are not just getting our ticket punched.
1) Micah 6:6-8 “Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
2) Colossians 2:20-23 “Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (Touch not; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.”
2. We must put aside all worldly concerns and focus on spiritual concerns.
1) We are to focus upon the spiritual. Colossians 3:1-4 “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”
2) We are to draw near in full assurance of faith. Hebrews 10:19-25 “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.”
3. We must have the attitude of the broken and contrite heart.
1) Psalm 51:17 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: A broken and contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”
2) Isaiah 57:15 “For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite.”
3) Isaiah 66:2 “Thus saith Jehovah, Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: what manner of house will ye build unto me? and what place shall be my rest? For all these things hath my hand made, and {so} all these things came to be, saith Jehovah: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and that trembleth at my word.”
4) Romans 2:29 “For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh: but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.”
III. For our Actions in Worship
1. Singing
1) Ephesians 5:19 “speaking one to another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;”
2) Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms {and} hymns {and} spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts unto God.”
3) James 5:13 “Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise.”
2. Praying
1) Philippians 4:6 “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
2) 1 Tim. 2:1 “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men”
3) Rev. 8:3-4 “And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel’s hand.”
3. Giving
1) 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 “Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.”
2) 2 Corinthians 9:7-8 “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:”
4. Communing in the Lord’s Supper
1) Matthew 26:26-29 “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
2) 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.”
5. Teacher/Learning God’s Word
1) Peter says that Jesus commanded them to preach. Acts 10:42 “And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.”
2) Acts 20:7 “And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.”
