Our Open Communication With God
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesIt seems that the days when a real live person greets you on the other end of the phone line is history. Whenever we try to “reach out and touch someone” today, the only “someone” we reach is usually a computerized voice.
Aren’t we thankful this isn’t true of our heavenly Father. He’s always there to listen to His children (Deuteronomy 5:27-28 – NKJV). With Him, there are no voice-mail boxes — no “press 2 for grace and forgiveness” — no “call waiting” interruptions. No more “All lines are now busy — your call is important to me — please stay on the line” business.
In contrast, our Lord says:
“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3 – NKJV).
Communication with God is a two-way street. He speaks to us when we come attentively before Him in prayer and through the clear teachings of the indwelling Spirit (Philippians 4:6 – NKJV; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 – NKJV). He paid a great price to keep the lines of communication open so that we can hear Him and experience the joy of being still long enough to know that He is God (Psalm 85:8 – NKJV; Psalm 46:10 – NKJV).
As the words of the inspiring old hymn “In the Garden” tell us:
And He walks with me,
and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known —C. Austin Miles
