Origin And Meaning Of Leadership Terms

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

A querist asks, “There are different words used in the New Testament to describe those who have the oversight of the church:

1) Elders — Acts 14:23 KJV.

2) Pastors — Ephesians 4:11 KJV.

3) Bishops — Philippians 1:1 KJV.

4) Presbytery (or Presbyters) — 1 Timothy 4:14 KJV.

5) Shepherds — (used metaphorically of those who act as pastors) Ephesians 4:11 KJV.

Although the above terms are applicable to the same men, they are not of the same origin, and some differ in the work and functions which they describe. Can you please give us the origin of the above words and their meaning?”
