On Being Led By The Spirit
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesA querist asks, Paul says in Romans 8:14 that we are “led by the Spirit of God.” My question is, “How are we led by God’s Spirit?”
The text in Romans 8:14-NKJV states:
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.“
The Holy Spirit leads by means of divine revelation (cf. Gal. 1:11-12-NKJV; Ephesians 3:1-3-NKJV; Ephesians 3:5-NKJV). From Ephesians 6:17-NKJV, we know that the medium the Spirit uses is the word of God. The result or “fruit” of the Spirit’s teaching through this medium is: “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Gal. 5:22-23-NKJV).
Note that by inspiration, Paul states in 1 Timothy 4:1-NKJV:
“Now the Spirit expressly says ….“
Thus by inspiration, Paul spoke what the Spirit directed him to speak, and wrote what the Spirit directed him to write (1 Corinthians 2:1-13-NKJV; cf. 2 Peter 1:20-21-NKJV).
When an individual conducts his life by the Holy Spirit’s instruction, he will seek spiritual goals rather than fleshly goals (Matthew 6:33-NKJV; Gal. 5:16-NKJV; Colossians 3:1-2-NKJV) and will thus produce the proper fruit of the Holy Spirit’s teaching through God’s faith system — the word of God (Romans 10:17-NKJV).
