“Lord, Give Us Godly Men!”
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesOn this Father’s Day, we don’t need more lords, masters, kings or bosses. Rather, we need godly men in homes — not shouting directions from their recliners or cell phones, but godly fathers who are willing to take an active part in the training of their children (cf. Deuteronomy 6:1-9; Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4).
We need godly men who are compassionate, insightful, and personally involved in relationships with God’s people (cf. 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10).
We need godly men who take the initiative, being good examples of what they teach (cf. 1 Timothy 4:12; Titus 2:7-8), establishing spiritual values that take priority over prosperity, recreation, entertainment, and yes, even secular education (cf. Matthew 6:33; 1 Timothy 4:8).
We need men who want to lead in the marriage relationship (Ephesians 5:25-33). A husband who doesn’t lead in the marriage, forces the wife to take the lead — and that comes at a price — for both the man and the woman. If a father won’t take the lead in the family, it forces the mother to shoulder extra work and reflects on the father in the eyes of the children.
If men do not take the lead in the congregation of the Lord’s people, it either goes without direction or women take the lead — confusion, strife, division or spiritual death is most often the consequence. In every instance, it is to the shame and disgrace of the man!
We need young men who are preparing to be good husbands, fathers, preachers and elders. Let us pray that God will give us men who will “act like men” (1 Corinthians 16:13 ESV).
On this Father’s Day (and every day), let our prayer be, “Lord, give us godly men!”
