Let's Pray To Trust And Obey
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesThe story is told of a Christian man who was among many tourists on a cruise ship. A violent storm arose, sinking the ship and all that were on board, with the exception of this man. Before the ship went down, he managed to grab his suitcase and a flotation device. Miraculously, he drifted upon a small island where he found safety.
Several months went by. Day after day, he prayed for God to deliver him, but his faith was weakening. Fortunately for him, there was plenty of food to be found on the island, in the form of various fruits and nuts. He also found plenty of materials with which to make a grass hut. He realized that his condition could have been much worse.
One day, while he was gathering food on the other side of the island, the wind blew some hot ashes onto his grass hut. When he returned, he found his little grass hut burned to the ground — all his possessions destroyed. He thought to himself, “I’ve prayed every day for God to deliver me — this is last straw.” He then proceeded to give God a piece of his mind.
As he was really letting God have it, a ship suddenly approached the island. When the rescue team came up on shore, they said to the man, “It was very wise of you to have such a big fire with all that smoke, or we would never have found you.”
Brethren and friends, there’s a great lesson for us in the above story. We know that through His providence, God works in ways we many times do not understand. However, we do know this:
“We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them” (Romans 8:28-NLT).
Our task then, is not to figure out how God works, but to simply trust Him to work everything out for our good and benefit (cf. Deuteronomy 6:24-NKJV; Deuteronomy 10:12-13-NKJV). Let’s pray to trust and obey, so that we might draw closer to the Lord along life’s way.
When we walk with the Lord
In the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way;
While we do His good will,
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.
Trust and obey,
For there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey. —D.B. Towner
