God's Way Is Always Better

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles, uncategorized

People all over our country are constantly looking for the better item, whether buying fruit in a market or choosing a place to live. We examine, ponder, compare, and finally make a choice based on what we believe is better. Can we imagine anyone saying, “I’m convinced this item is worse, so I’ll take it”?

The book of Proverbs is filled with comparisons that point us toward the right pathway in life. Because the book’s purpose is to give the reader knowledge and wisdom based on the fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:2-3; Proverbs 1:7; Proverbs 8:13; Proverbs 16:6), it’s not surprising to find the phrase that says, “This is better than …..”

For example, in Proverbs 16, we read that it is better to get wisdom than gold or silver (Proverbs 16:16); better to be humble among the poor than to be proud among the wealthy (Proverbs 16:19); better to control our temper than to rule a city (Proverbs 16:32). While some folks have the ability to be both wise and wealthy, the Proverb writer says wisdom is the better alternative (Proverbs 4:5-8).

As we read and study the book of Proverbs, let’s look for those signs that say, “This is better!” When we allow God’s Word to shape our thinking and guide our choices, we’ll discover that His way is for our benefit and always better (cf. Deuteronomy 6:24-25; 1 John 5:2-3; Hebrews 8:1-6).
