Direct From The Minting House
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesAfter mastering the Scriptures and sensing that God had spoken to him again and again through its inspired pages (2 Timothy 3:16), John Bunyan went on to be a preacher and an author of more than sixty books, including his classic allegory, “The Pilgrim’s Progress” (see review).
Regarding Bible study, Bunyan once stated:
“Although you may have no commentaries at hand, continue to read the Word and pray; for a little from God is better than a great deal received from a man. Too many are content to listen to what comes from men’s mouths, without searching and kneeling before God to know the real truth. That which we receive directly from the Lord through the study of His Word is from the ‘minting house’ itself. Even old truths are new if they come to us with the smell of heaven upon them” (source).
John Bunyan knew that the Word of God has the power to “mint” us into God’s own (Romans 1:16; 1 Peter 2:1-10), “if” we take the time to study His Word (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV).
The question is, “Are we spending the necessary time in the study of God‘s word — the Word that comes direct from the minting house?
Brethren and friends, today (and every day) in prayer, let us ask the Lord to give us an understanding of His Word (Colossians 1:9-11; cf. Ephesians 1:15-19; Ephesians 3:1-6).
Then along with the Psalmist, we can declare, “Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day” (Psalm 119:97; cf. Psalm 1:1-2).
