Descriptive Titles Of The Church

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

The Bible portrays the nature of the church in various descriptive titles which are applied to it. The following descriptive titles speak of the church’s relationship to Christ and the world, as well as the relationship of members one to another. The Lord’s church is described:

As A Pearl

The church of our Lord is costly. It is to be “bought” even at the expense of “selling all one has” (Matthew 13:45-46).

As A Kingdom

Those members who make up the “kingdom” (Colossians 1:12-13) of our King Jesus are obedient to His divine law (Matthew 17:5; cf. John 1:45; Acts 3:19-23; Deuteronomy 18:15,19). Efforts of others to “bind” where the King has “loosed” or to “loose” where the King has “bound” are not authoritative in His kingdom (Matthew 16:18-19).

As A House

The Lord’s House is built in an orderly fashion. Every stone is “fitly framed together” (Ephesians 2:21) as a “spiritual house” (1 Peter 2:5) “for an habitation of God” (Ephesians 2:22).

As A Flock

The Lord’s flock is dependent upon Him (John 10:10). The flock is to be fed on the pure “milk of the word” (1 Peter 2:2; 1 Tim. 4:6) and dependent on “the Shepherd and Bishop of our souls” (1 Peter 2:25).

As A Family

The church bears His name (Matthew 16:18; Ephesians 1:10; Ephesians 3:14-15; Colossians 1:13-18) and is composed of God’s children who are “joint-heirs” with Christ of the heavenly glory (Romans 8:17-18).

As A Bride

Christ’s church is vitally “joined” to Him (2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:30-32). His church is subject to Him “who loved it and gave Himself for it” (Ephesians 5:22-33).

As A Body

The Lord’s church is united (Romans 12:16; 1 Corinthians 1:10; 2 Corinthians 13:11; 1 Peter 3:8). No member is unnecessary in the Lord’s body (1 Corinthians 12:22). Each member cares for the other and all are joined to Christ, the Head (1 Corinthians 12:12-27).

Conclusion

If you are not already, won’t you please consider becoming a member of the Lord’s church today? You’ll be eternally glad that you did (1 Peter 1:4).
