Another Blow To Millennialism

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

There are many folks in the religious community who endorse premillennialism. This teaching states that Christ will someday return to earth and reign from Palestine for a period of one thousand years. This doctrine contradicts clear Bible teaching.

The Teaching Of Hebrews 8:4

One obstacle to the teaching of premillennialism is found in the above verse, which states that Christ could not serve as a priest while on earth because he was not from the priestly tribe of Levi (Hebrews 7:11). In fact, the text clearly states “that our Lord sprang out of Judah; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood” (Hebrews 7:14)

The Teaching Of Zechariah 6:12-13

Looking at the Old Testament book of Zechariah, we see a prophecy of the coming of the Messiah who was to be known as “The BRANCH”. This prophecy states that He “shall sit and rule upon his throne (as king); and he shall be a priest upon his throne…”

Conclusion

If Christ is to be both a priest and king simultaneously, and he cannot be a priest upon the earth (Hebrews 8:4), it then becomes apparent that He cannot occupy an earthly throne (as king) – which is the very thing millennialists contend that He will do.
