An Unwashed Soul Is Like An Unwashed Car

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

For the past few weeks, El Paso has experienced several sandstorms mixed with drops of rain, causing many cars to be in dire need of being washed. In fact, about a week ago, I washed my car three times in one day because clouds kept coming back and dropping raindrops on the car that was grimy with dirt.

An unwashed soul is like an unwashed car.

If we’re Christians, our souls can become like an unwashed car, in that they can become dirty due to worldly sandstorms that infiltrate and influence them with smut, coarse words, and bad habits. Just as we wash the windows of a car in order to see out clearly, we must also wash the spiritual windows to our soul (the eyes) that they may be clean as well (Matthew 6:22-23). We must be willing to “lay aside” any sinful tendencies that cloud our spiritual vision, by confessing our sins (1 John 1:9; cf. Proverbs 28:13), and then focusing our eyes on Jesus, “the author and perfecter of  faith” (Hebrews 12:1-2 NASB).

If we’re non-Christians, our souls are definitely contaminated by worldly sandstorms that cause dirt to seep into our mind through magazines, movies, music and television. The only way that the souls of non-Christians can become washed and clean is “with the washing of water by the word” (Ephesians 5:25-27), which is an allusion to baptism (Acts 2:38; 1 Peter 3:18-21).

Let’s seriously think about the above thoughts — then take any necessary action to make our souls clean — giving our spiritual eyes the ability to clearly see the spiritual goals that God has set before us (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16).
