An Engagement That Could Not Be Broken
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles, uncategorizedThe story is told that soon after President James A. Garfield took office, a member of his cabinet insisted that a meeting be called to discuss a matter that had the potential of becoming a national crisis. President Garfield refused, saying he had another appointment already scheduled — one that could not be broken.
The cabinet member kept insisting that the matter was of grave importance, but the President still would not budge from his decision to keep his appointment.
Frustrated that the President would not change his mind, the cabinet member then remarked, “Mr. President, I would be interested to know with whom you have an engagement so important that it cannot be broken.” President Garfield replied, “I will be as frank with you as you are with me. My engagement is with the Lord, to meet Him at His house and at His table at 10:00 tomorrow morning, and I shall be there.”
Brethren, if we’ll make the same commitment as President Garfield, the Lord’s house will have no problem in being filled every Lord’s Day (Matthew 6:33 NKJV; cf. Psalm 122:1 NKJV).
