An Elder — Deacon Question

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

A querist asks, “If a man has been married to one woman his whole life, yet committed adultery 15 years prior, is he then disqualified from being an elder or deacon?”

He is not disqualified from being an elder or deacon if:

1) He biblically repented of his adultery (Psalm 32:5; 1 John 1:9; cf. Matthew 3:8; Acts 26:20; 2 Corinthians 7:9-10.

2) Is still married to his original mate (1 Timothy 3:2).

3) Has a good report or reputation in the community (1 Timothy 3:7).

4) Continues to “walk in the light” of God’s teachings (1 John 1:7; cf. Psalm 119:105; Proverbs 6:23).
