A Look At The Word “Confirm”

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

There are many in the religious world today who claim to have the supernatural gifts of tongues and healings. However, this cannot be true, because the purpose of the miraculous gifts in the first century was to “confirm” the word of God (Mark 16:20; Hebrews 2:3-4; cf. Acts 5:12; 1 Corinthians 2:4-5).

The word “confirm” means to “to make firm, establish, confirm, make sure.”

The United States Constitution was confirmed [signed] on September 17, 1787, by the signatures of George Washington and 38 other statesmen. That document was confirmed 224 years ago, and no one can reconfirm or re-sign it today.

Just as our nation stands on the foundation of the Constitution, the church of our Lord is founded on the teachings of New Testament (Matthew 16:13-19).

Both documents were confirmed in their beginning. The very nature of “confirming” takes place at the beginning of a document — not throughout its existence.

The miraculous gifts of the first century are to the New Testament what the signatures of the fathers are to our Constitution — neither can be duplicated or reproduced today (Gal. 1:6-12; cf. Revelation 22:18-20).
