Cunningly Devised Fables. Sermon outline on the evidentiary power of witnesses. Others would have us believe that the Gospel is cunningly devised fables. Peter and other witnesses say it is true. By G. E. Watkins.

Introduction: 2 Pet. 1:16

1. Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code is back in the news with the release of the DVD.

2. Even my daughter’s Middle School classes have brought up the subject.

3. There are those giving favor to the theories found in Da Vinci Code.

4. We have to make the choice between makers of theories and eye-witnesses.

Discussion:

I.   Cunningly Devised Fables

1. Cunningly — With skill and deftness.

2. Devised — created from one’s imagination for one’s own purposes.

3. Fables — stories not in sync with reality.

4. Peter is calling that which competes with the eyewitness account a cunningly devised fable.

5. He didn’t follow them — neither should we.

6. Note the work of Luke, Luke 1:2.

7. The testimony of John, 1 John 1:1-2.

II.  Our Gospel is Based on Witnesses

1. Acts 1:8, “ye shall be my witnesses”

2. Acts 1:22, “of these must one become a witness”

3. Acts 2:32, “we all are witnesses”

4. Acts 3:15, “whereof we are witnesses”

5. Acts 4:33, “with great power gave the apostles their witness of the resurrection”

6. Acts 5:32, “and we are witnesses of these things”

7. Acts 10:39-41, “we are witnesses of all things”

8. Acts 13:31, “who are now his witnesses”

9. Acts 22:15, “thou shalt be a witness”

10.Acts 23:11, “bear witness also at Rome”

11.Acts 26:16, “appoint thee a minister and a witness”

12.1 Cor. 15:1-8, 15

Conclusion:

1. Shall we follow cunningly devised fables? No!

2. These facts ought to make the books of Dan Brown a footnote in history, … and they do for us.
