“Take the Name of Jesus With You”

SUBJECT: Example

TITLE: Take the Name of Jesus With You

PROPOSITION: How can I take the name of Jesus with me? I can take the name of Jesus with me by 1) by Speech, 2) Knowledge, 3) Dress, and 4) Actions

OBJECTIVES: Each should understand what it means to take the name of Jesus into the foreign country of our world and explain how we can take the name of Jesus with us.

AIM: To help all understand what it means to take the name of Jesus with us so that when we sing the song, we will be thinking about the things we can do to take this name with us.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: 1 Cor. 1:1-3

2. About the Text:

1) In this passage Paul wished grace and peace upon the church at Corinth.

2) But not only from him, but with all who call upon the name of Jesus.

3) It is the name of Jesus to which the apostles gave heed.

4) They suffered in the name of Jesus, Acts 5:41 “They therefore departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the Name.”

5) They preached in the name of Jesus, Acts 9:27 “But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus.”

6) They knew one day all would bow to the name of Jesus, Phil. 2:10 “that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and things on earth and things under the earth,”

3. A name shows authority.

1) If I go to the bank to cash a check, it better have the right name – right authority. If I am to pay for anything in this manner, I must take my name with me.

2) If I have a bill of money of any denomination, it better have the right name signed on it. If I am to pay for anything with U.S. dollars, I must take the name of the secretary of the treasury with me.

3) If I go to a foreign country my passport better have the right name on it. If I am to go to any foreign country, I must take the name of the Secretary of State with me.

4) So also, if I am to conduct the business of my Lord, Jesus, I must take His name with me as well.

4. We are also strangers and pilgrims in this land seeking a better/heavenly country (Heb. 11:13-16).

I.   Speech

1. When you go to a foreign country, usually others can tell where you are from by your speech, your accent.

2. People can tell what country we are from spiritually as well, by our speech.

3. Col. 4:6 “Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer each one.”

4. Eph. 4:25 “Wherefore, putting away falsehood, speak ye truth each one with his neighbor: for we are members one of another.”

5. Eph. 4:29 “Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for edifying as the need may be, that it may give grace to them that hear.”

II.  Knowledge

1. When one initially travels to a foreign country, he is ignorant of the ways of that country. It isn’t until he experiences the country that he comes to know the ways of that country.

2. What can we say regarding our knowledge of the strange land through which we sojourn, the world? Not awareness, but knowledge through experience.

3. John says that our knowledge ought not to be that of experience.

4. 1 John 2:15-17 “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the vain glory of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

5. The world has a knowledge that we don’t want. 1 Cor. 15:34 “Awake to soberness righteously, and sin not; for some have no knowledge of God: I speak this to move you to shame.”

6. Our knowledge should not be in wordly matters, but in spiritual matters. Peter writes “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and for ever. Amen.” (2 Peter 3:18).

III. Dress

1. Going to a foreign country, one may also be noticed because one dresses differently. Often it is one of the first things to be noticed and a person can identify what country one is from by what they wear.

2. Are we concerned about our dress as Christians?

3. Once Adam and Eve sinned, God made them coats to cover themselves because the leaves were not enough to do the job (Genesis 3:21).

4. The priests under the Old Law were required to cover their nakedness (Exodus 28:42).

5. 1 Timothy 2:9, 10 “In like manner, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefastness and sobriety; not with braided hair, and gold or pearls or costly raiment; but (which becometh women professing godliness) through good works.”

6. Do we take the name of Jesus with us in our dress?

IV.  Actions

1. It doesn’t take long for the actions of a visitor to another country to reveal him as being out of place.

2. So also, our actions, as citizens of a heavenly kingdom, ought to reveal the name of our King.

3. Citizens of God’s kingdom don’t behave in the way the world behaves.

4. They don’t engage in sexual promiscuity — “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God.” (1 Thess. 4:3-5).

5. Those who surround them think it strange that they don’t engage in such — “wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you” (1 Peter 4:4).

6. Instead, Christians behave in a holy way exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, self-control; against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22).

5) 1 Peter 2:11, 12 “Beloved, I beseech you as sojourners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; having your behavior seemly among the Gentiles; that, wherein they speak against you as evil-doers, they may by your good works, which they behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.”
