A Look At Immortality

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

Have we ever just sat down and pondered about what immortality might be like? Just think, one day, we will put off this fleshly state and put on immortality (1 Corinthians 15:53). We will put off our corruptible body and exchange it for an incorruptible body — a body that will never know decay or death (1 Corinthians 15:42,50,53-57; cf. 2 Corinthians 5:1-4).

Just as the Lord was resurrected and is alive forevermore (1 Corinthians 15:20; 1 Peter 1:3; Revelation 1:18), we also will be resurrected and be alive forevermore (Romans 8:11; 1 Corinthians 6:14; 2 Corinthians 4:14).

The view that denies the existence of God and the immortality of man, is the same view that is responsible for the degenerate behavior we find among evildoers today. These folks take no responsibility for what they think and do and do not really care (Romans 1:32).

If people are convinced that this life is all there is to their existence, they have no fear of doing whatever they see fit (Genesis 6:5; Genesis 11:1-6; Judges 17:6; Judges 21:25).

Because of our future immortality, Jesus says, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28).

Sad to say, the vast majority of people will end up in hell (Matthew 7:13-14).

In Luke 16:19-31, we see that there is indeed life after death; there is reward and punishment; and one is able to remember after death (Luke 16:25).

Since we are destined to become immortal beings, would it not make sense to prepare ourselves for that eternal existence? We do that by obeying the gospel plan of salvation today.

Dear reader, if you haven’t already, won’t you please consider obeying that plan today? (2 Corinthians 6:2).
